🌍 GII drives methane action in Côte d’Ivoire!
Expanding our methane action into the West African subregion, our Programs Director, Mawuena E. Goka recently represented Greener Impact Internatioanl (GII) in an interview on Radio de la Paix in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
As Côte d'Ivoire emerges as one of West Africa's major energy producers, it has a rare opportunity that many mature petroleum-producing nations missed: integrating methane management into its oil and gas sector from the very beginning.
The interview highlighted a timely new GII research article co-published by Kassim Gawusu-Toure and Mawuena Goka, which examines the realities of Côte d'Ivoire's rapidly growing hydrocarbons industry.
Key insights from the discussion & research:
📊 The Data Gap: A major challenge in the country's expanding energy sector is the limited availability of methane emissions data.
🚩 The Risk: Without adequate measurement, monitoring, and reporting, traditional practices like venting, flaring, and equipment leaks are likely occurring unnoticed.
🎁 The Opportunity: By adopting clear policies, effective monitoring, and proven mitigation technologies now, Côte d'Ivoire can build an energy sector that is both economically competitive and environmentally responsible.
Rather than repeating the mistakes of long-established producers, the country can lead the region in sustainable energy development from the outset.
