GAPNET & DONYEPA Celebrate Six Donkey Farmers at the 41st Regional Farmers Day

On Friday, 5th December 2025, GAPNET and DONYEPA, with support from Brooks West Africa, honoured six hardworking donkey farmers from Bongo, Bolgatanga and Kassena Nankana West during the Regional Farmers Day celebration.

The awards are part of our work to protect donkeys from extinction and to support farmers who care for them responsibly. Each winner received a donkey, Wellington boots and a cutlass to help strengthen their farming activities.

Award Winners:
Bolgatanga Municipality – Akaribo Agemba, Anyansi Agana
Bongo District – Atambila Doris Atampoka, Abangre Atanga
Kassena Nankana West – Aberinga Felicia, Nsoh Anyoka

In recent years, GAPNET has stepped up advocacy to stop the mass slaughter of donkeys for their hides. Through collaboration with local authorities, several illegal slaughter points have been closed, and community engagement continues across the region.

At the event, Prof. Roger Kanton reminded us why this work matters:
“Instead of only talking about stopping the slaughter, we must also focus on helping farmers raise more donkeys.”

Donkeys play an essential role in many households—helping with transportation, haulage and ploughing. Supporting the people who care for them is key to preserving both livelihoods and the species.

👏 Congratulations to all the awardees!

GAPNET Advocates for Donkey Protection at Parliament
On Thursday, 17th July, the Ghana Poultry Network
(GAPNET) engaged with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and Cocoa Affairs to raise a critical concern affecting rural livelihoods and animal welfare.
We presented a passionate appeal for urgent legislative action to address the alarming rise in donkey exploitation in Ghana. Our key recommendations included:
Banning the mass slaughter and export of donkey hides
v Strengthening enforcement against illegal donkey trafficking
Promoting sustainable, community-based alternatives that protect livelihoods and conserve Ghana's fast-declining donkey population
Donkeys are not just animals — they are essential to transportation, farming, and economic resilience in many rural communities. Their depletion threatens food security, environmental sustainability, and local economies.
We appreciate the Committee's willingness to engage, and we look forward to working together toward policies that reflect the urgency of this issue and the realities of affected communities.

Ghana's Water Bodies and Land Under Threat: A Call to Action

Illegal mining (galamsey) is devastating Ghana's ecosystems, causing water pollution and land degradation. As an NGO, committed to one health and poverty eradication, we are deeply concerned about its impact on natural resources and public health.

Galamsey is causing environmental damage across Ghana, polluting water sources, destroying biodiversity, and eroding soil. Contaminated water poses health risks, and land degradation is leading to flooding and loss of farming productivity, further worsening poverty and inequality.

We call on the government to act by:
- Enforcing laws against illegal mining.
- Promoting sustainable mining practices.
- Supporting alternative livelihoods.
- Investing in environmental restoration.

Call to Action:
- Spread awareness about galamsey.
- Donate to support our cause.
- Urge officials to take stronger action.

Together, we can protect Ghana’s future!

At Ghana Poultry Network , we are immensely grateful for the partnership and support from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and our esteemed partners from the United Kingdom. Their recent training on administering surveys for disease surveillance systems focused on Avian Influenza, Newcastle Disease Virus in poultry, and Peste des Petits Ruminants in small ruminants in Ghana was invaluable.
It was a productive week, equipping our team with the necessary skills and knowledge. As sub-contractors for the Animal and Plant Health Agency(APHA) in the UK, and in collaboration with the Veterinary Services Directorate of Ghana, we are poised to enhance our animal disease surveillance systems significantly.

The insights gained from this survey will be instrumental in informing improvements in Ghana's animal disease surveillance, ensuring better health management for our livestock.

Thank you to all involved for their dedication and expertise!
