Boris Johnson and EU officials were urgently evacuated after a Russian drone attack on a train near the Polish-Ukrainian border.
A Russian drone hit a passenger train on the Kiev-Varsovia route, just 2 km from Poland; the attacks damaged vehicles and a gas station near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing, putting a special train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and top EU officials at risk of evacuation after a drone alert was issued.
Russian forces launched a series of drone attacks near the Ukrainian border with Poland on September 13, hitting transport and fuel infrastructure across one of the country's most important connections with the European Union and triggering air defense alerts on the NATO side of the border.
The crew had been warned of the imminent threat and the train was evacuated before impact. No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, a gas station and several trucks caught fire near the Yahodyn-Dorohusk border crossing during the attacks. The crossing, one of the main land routes between Ukraine and Poland, suffered temporary disruptions. Moscow claimed its attacks were aimed at infrastructure facilitating the transport of European military cargo to Ukraine.
The attack occurred dangerously near a special train carrying Johnson, GΓΌnter Sautter, foreign policy and security advisor to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and other European delegates returning from Kiev.
The media outlet 'Der Spiegel' reported that the train was trapped in the danger zone and had to be partially evacuated. Passengers were alerted during the journey and prepared to abandon the train after a drone alert was issued. Johnson, Sautter, and the rest of the passengers were unharmed.
Johnson and Sautter had been in Kiev to attend the annual Yalta European Strategy conference, which brought together top Ukrainian officials and Western policymakers responsible for security and decision-making.
Among the participants were also the Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, RadosΕaw Sikorski; the UK's National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell; the former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt; and security advisors from France and Italy.
