Our article on Ghana’s inefficient cocoa input distribution system has been published in the Business & Financial Times newspaper today.

We call on the government to urgently reform the outdated and defective system for the benefit of cocoa farmers and the country as a whole.

It is long overdue to treat cocoa farming as a viable business in order to attract enterprising youth and women.

NEWS UPDATE!

This week, there has been a sharp rise in the world price of cocoa, from around $3,400/ton on Monday to around $4,400/ton today.

This is the highest price recorded since February 2026.

Irregular rainfall in parts of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, shortages of fertilizer, and the possibility of the El Niño phenomenon are expected to affect production levels during the mid-crop and upcoming seasons, causing the spike in prices.

If this momentum continues, regulators in West Africa may increase farmgate prices for farmers, thereby improving their livelihoods.

Ghana's cocoa input distribution system is inefficient, costly, and prone to corruption.

Regrettably, it did not receive any attention in the country's new cocoa reforms announced in February 2026.

In this article, Joel Aweyam and Princess Owusu Boateng highlight the glaring inefficiencies and call for urgent structural reforms.

They note that an efficient, well-targeted system will not only improve productivity and incomes for our over 800,000 cocoa farming households, but also strengthen Ghana’s export earnings and overall economic stability.

What does rural development mean to you?

For us, rural development means empowering rural youth, women, and smallholder cocoa farmers to access fulfilling opportunities and transform their communities.

This vision drove our significant progress in the first quarter of 2026, during which we directly empowered over 400 rural and underserved youth and reached more than 10,000 people.

The collective efforts of our dedicated team, generous donors and partners, and motivated beneficiaries made these achievements possible. Ayekoo to you all!

Ghana Education Service has opened applications for the recruitment of 7,000 teachers to underserved schools in rural areas.

This is an important step toward ensuring that rural students have access to quality education and training, just like their counterparts in the cities.

We encourage qualified and passionate teachers to apply and help train students in rural areas for a better future.
