The Mole National Park, located in the Larabanga township of the Savannah Region – about 700km from Accra, the nation’s capital – is home to about 94 mammal species, 300 bird species, 33 reptile species and nine amphibian species with animals like the elephant, bushbuck and kob being the most commonly sighted species.
According to reports, some poachers burn parts of the forests to hunt for animals such grasscutters. The smoke from these fires force the animals out of their natural homes thereby exposing them to be caught for game.
The ripple effect is that smoke from these bush-burning expeditions releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and pollute the environment, thereby influencing climate change while destroying the natural vegetation.
There is the need to protect wildlife in Ghana, in Africa and all over the world as our existence as a race depends greatly on their existence as well. This is a wake-up call to our activists, leaders and all stakeholders to put in the work in protecting our very existence as a race by protecting our natural world.
