IISS continues to play a leading role as the foremost professional non-government organization in Ghana specialized in national security intelligence affairs, with our experts undertaking critical assignments in Ghana and across the sub-region, including Nigeria, Cote Ivoire, Togo and Burkina Faso.

Our experts have over the years provided expertise for assignments commissioned by reputable organizations including German Development Cooperation (GIZ Ghana, GIZ Nigeria and GIZ ECOWAS Cooperation), UNICEF, Ghana Police Service, Department of Peace and Security Studies of University for Development Studies (UDS), and several non-governmental organizations and corporate institutions.

Some recent assignments include law enforcement and border security trainings; intelligence operations training, border interdiction training, combating cross-border crime workshops, enhancing cross-border law enforcement cooperation.

Our experts also led Security and Social Vulnerability Assessment under UNICEF commissioned Sahel Violent Extremism Spill-Over Risk Assessment in Eleven (11) border districts of northern Ghana.

We are currently providing expertise alongside Gibson Safety and Security Consult to GIZ Nigeria on Strengthening Capacities of State Peace Institutions in Plateau and Taraba States in Central Nigeria.

Over the past week, we conducted specialized security training for private security personnel deployed for diplomatic/international organization security protection duties.

Our training package for diplomatic and international organizations' protection teams is designed to provide security guards, escorts and executive protection units with the skills and competencies required to function within this environment.

As a specialized training, participants of this course must have previously attended basic training in private security, physical security or infrastructure protection, as this training is an advanced training designed specifically for personnel operating in international organizations and diplomatic environments such as embassies, UN agencies, INGOs etc.

Our expert team are specialized instructors with operational experience in the field of infrastructure protection, law enforcement, diplomatic security and intelligence operations.

We build the required skill-set for operations across different operating environments.

This PhD dissertation by Eshun, Joe Sarbah, at the Brunel University's Center for Intelligence and Security Studies, London builds upon the foundational work of Jatuat, M.Y. (2020) on this subject and stands out as one of the few valuable work authored by a Ghanaian researcher on this critical topic, apart from Jatuat.

"This, therefore, evidently raises the question, why has such an important factor (national security architecture) barely been comprehensively considered as a key to Ghana’s success story? One exception is Jatuat’s article, “National Security: Role of Intelligence, Institutions and Legal Framework in Ghana”38, which acknowledges the good work done by the ‘national intelligence agencies’ of Ghana.

This raises another significant question, which is, how is the national security architecture and/or its security sector perceived by authors who have shown interest in writing on the subject-matter?......... One of the very few pieces of literature with a similar narrative to this dissertation is Moses Jatuat’s work on ‘National Security: Role of Intelligence, Institutions and Legal Framework in Ghana’56. Jatuat acknowledges how ‘National Security’ and ‘Intelligence’ are ‘increasingly becoming common among many people’, including ‘law enforcement personnel, security, social & political commentators and the general public.’57 Jatuat’s work however attributes the reason why people are becoming increasingly aware of intelligence and national security to them ‘becoming more concerned about their safety and security.’

What makes Jatuat’s work notable is that it assesses activities of the ‘national intelligence agencies’ through the lenses of the country’s legal framework and positions itself as an advocate for increasing ‘education on the subject of national security and intelligence’.58 Similar to this dissertation, Jatuat also sees the terms ‘national security’ and intelligence as ‘inextricably linked’. Jatuat’s work acknowledges that ‘national intelligence agencies have done very well under the fourth Republic to maintain peace, security and stability of Ghana’, a view shared by this dissertation"

IISS AND UDS STRENGTHEN COLLABORATION TO ENHANCE TRAINING AND RESEARCH IN NATIONAL SECURITY INTELLIGENCE

We are happy to announce a strategic partnership with University for Development Studies - UDS Department of Peace and Security Studies (DoPSS).

The partnership aims to strengthen collaboration in professional training and research in national security and intelligence. IISS as a specialized national security training provider has over the past year supported the DoPSS on curriculum design and development of national security and intelligence courses.

IISS capacity building curricula and training modules are now approved courses of study at the UDS Department of Peace and Security Studies.

IISS remains committed to building recognized standards of professionalism in national security intelligence.
