All-Africa Students UNION

All-Africa Students UNION The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) is the mother union of all student movements in Africa. The 7 Strategic Priorities of the Union are:
1. Gender Advocacy
3.

The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) is the largest student movement in Africa and a very dominant force on the Continent and beyond. The Union, being the umbrella organization for all students of Africa, represents tens and millions from the basic level to institutions of higher learning. Since its inception in 1972, AASU now has presence in 54 Countries in Africa. The Union played an important r

ole in the struggle against colonialism and the ending of apartheid in South Africa. Today, AASU is at the forefront of the fights for equal access to quality education, quality assurance in higher education, harmonization of higher education systems – with key emphasis on the mobility of academics and comparability of qualifications, democratic governance, defending students’ rights, promotion of gender and African culture, sustainable development, entrepreneurship, fostering of academic freedom, freedom of research and autonomy of higher institutions of learning, and the promotion of peace and democratic values, and other noteworthy objectives. In the year 2000, the UN awarded AASU a certificate of merit in recognition of the Union’s efforts at advancing students’ rights and championing the democratization of education across the African Continent. See: http://www.un.org/press/en/2000/20000410.dev2241.doc.html

The Union is wholly student-run and student-led, autonomous, representative, democratically elected and operates according to democratic principles. The executive structure of the Union is representative of all the sub-regions across the Continent. AASU’s key strength lies in its diversity and numerical strength (representing tens and millions of African Students), which it leverages as a bargaining tool to advocate for the supreme interests of students. The Union is made up of diverse students, regardless of their religion, gender, cultural background, political persuasion, ethnic origin, or social standing. The Union achieves its core mandate through:
● Advocacy – The Union campaigns actively in defence of students’ rights, and the passage of policies on the need for the democratization of education across the Continent, with emphasis on access, equity and equality.
● Capacity Development – The Union facilitates education and training to build the capacities of students through conferences, seminars, training programs and educational materials to enhance the potential of graduates to access decent jobs, develop their leadership skills and significantly improve their skill sets.
● Networking – The Union creates the platform and environment for networking amongst members aimed at building closer relations for healthy partnerships.
● Partnerships – The Union constantly seeks out collaborative partnerships with like-minded organizations to work together to advance progressive agendas. Education and Students Right

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026!

On this International Youth Day, the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) joins the global community in recognising and celebrating the vital role young people play in shaping the social, economic and sustainable development of our societies.

Across different countries, cultures and communities, young people continue to bring forward bold ideas, challenge the status quo, create opportunities and provide leadership in response to the challenges of our time. Their contributions are not merely promises for tomorrow, they are driving meaningful change today.

We believe that empowering young people goes beyond preparing them for the future. It means creating the space, opportunities and platforms for them to participate, lead, innovate and influence decisions that shape their communities and their future.

The future is not something we simply wait for. It is built through the ideas we advance, the actions we take and the leadership we demonstrate today. As we celebrate young people around the world, let us continue to turn aspirations into action, ideas into impact and opportunities into lasting change.

𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄: 𝐌𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐍 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

Reparatory justice means acknowledging historical wrongs, formal apologies, restitution, institutional reform, healing, cultural restoration and guarantees of non-repetition.

For Africa and People of African Descent, it means confronting the past while building a just and equitable future, one shaped by the young people who will inherit it. The Accra Next Steps Commitments recognise that youth must have a real voice in designing, implementing and monitoring this agenda.

That future also depends on reclaiming the past. Returning Africa’s cultural property, human remains, archives and heritage restores identity, preserves history and reconnects generations with who they are.

AASU calls on governments, institutions, civil society and young people to deepen advocacy, open real platforms for youth participation, and accelerate the return of Africa’s cultural heritage.

Justice must repair. Justice must restore. Justice must transform.

What should education look like beyond 2030? Those who will inherit it should help define it.

The Education Beyond 2030 Global Youth and Student Consultations provide young people aged 11–30 with an opportunity to contribute to the development of the Post-2030 Youth Education and Learning Agenda, which will be presented to global leaders at the 2027 Global Education Meeting.

If you are a student or young person, this is your opportunity to share your experiences, priorities, and ideas for building a more inclusive, equitable, and future-ready education system.

The All-Africa Students UNION stands in solidarity with the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as the country commemorates GENOCOST.

We honour the memory of those who lost their lives, recognise the strength of survivors, and reaffirm the need for truth, justice, accountability and lasting peace.

The safety, dignity and future of Congolese students and young people must remain central to Africa’s response. May the victims never be forgotten. May justice prevail. May peace endure.
