Grantee Spotlight: GAEA Conservation Network

The Grenada Sustainable Development Trust Fund (GSDTF) is proud to highlight the GAEA Conservation Network, recipient of a Pro-Nature Grant under the Caribbean Regional Architecture for Biodiversity (CRAB) Programme.

Through the Community-Anchored Monitoring Initiative, GAEA Conservation Network will lead a 12-month citizen science programme aimed at generating Grenada’s first national baseline data for some of our most important species, including the Critically Endangered Grenada Dove and Grenada Frog, as well as the Armadillo, Manicou, Mona Monkey, and Iguana.

The project will engage schools, community members, hunters, tour guides, and university students in collecting valuable field data while building local conservation skills and awareness. It will also support the development of nature-based eco-tourism opportunities and strengthen the country’s long-term conservation capacity.

Through the CRAB Pro-Nature Facility, this initiative highlights how communities can play a leading role in protecting Grenada’s biodiversity for future generations.

Supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM) through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), this project demonstrates the power of community participation in advancing biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

Biodiversity Conservation Awareness Campaign in Schools

The Grenada Sustainable Development Trust Fund (GSDTF) is pleased to announce the commencement of its Biodiversity Conservation Awareness Campaign in schools across Grenada.

This initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to highlight the important link between renewable energy and biodiversity conservation.

Through this campaign, students will learn how renewable energy helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change, thereby protecting Grenada’s rich biodiversity and the delicate species that are vulnerable to environmental changes.

Recently, Ms. Kimalene Regis, Communications Consultant of the GSDTF and PURC Representative, engaged students and educators at the JW Fletcher Memorial Secondary School in meaningful discussions about environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
As part of the campaign, each participating school will receive an electronic copy of the Grenada Biodiversity 101 magazine, an educational resource designed to increase awareness and appreciation of Grenada’s unique ecosystems.

The magazine was developed by intern Ms. Alyssa White, graduate of The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, with financial support from Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM) through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) under the Caribbean Regional Archtecture for Biodiversity (CRAB) Project.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Education for granting permission and supporting the implementation of this campaign in schools. Their partnership is helping to empower the next generation with the knowledge and tools needed to protect Grenada’s natural heritage.

Together, through education, renewable energy awareness, and biodiversity conservation, we are building a more sustainable and resilient Grenada for future generations.

CRAB Grantee Spotlight: Cinder’s Seamoss Health and Wellness (CSHW)

The Grenada Sustainable Development Trust Fund (GSDTF) is pleased to highlight Cinder’s Seamoss Health and Wellness (CSHW), a recipient under the CRAB Seamoss Facility.

CSHW is leading an innovative project that aims to make seamoss farming more environmentally friendly by replacing plastic bottles and tyres traditionally used in farming operations with low-cost, low-impact marine equipment.

Over the next year, the project will establish a pilot farm, evaluate its effectiveness, and train five young people in sustainable seamoss farming practices. The ultimate goal is to encourage wider adoption of these environmentally responsible methods across Grenada’s seamoss farming sector.

By reducing marine litter and promoting sustainable livelihoods, this initiative highlights how conservation and economic opportunity can work hand in hand.

Supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the Fonds Français pour l’Environnement Mondial (FFEM) through the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), this initiative demonstrates how innovation can strengthen livelihoods while protecting our marine environment.

Together, we’re creating healthier oceans, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for Grenada.
