❄️🌿 Another step towards Advancing Climate-Friendly Cooling in Grenada and the Caribbean ❄️🌿
On Friday, 5th June 2026, Eighty (80) R-290 Split Air Conditioning units were officially handed over to the Ministry of Climate Resilience, The Environment & Renewable Energy in Grenada.
The units were received by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Climate Resilience, The Environment and Renewable Energy Ms. Peron Johnson from GIZ Head of Project (G-CREWS) Ms. Marion Geiss.
The units were provided through The Green Room Air Conditioning (GRACE) project commissioned by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) within the International Climate Initiative (IKI).
The GRACE project promotes the adoption of energy-efficient, climate-friendly R-290 room air conditioners (Green ACs) across eight countries, including Grenada. By supporting the transition to greener cooling technologies, the project and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and the Kigali Amendment.
Of the 80 units, fifty (50) will remain in Grenada while 30 units will support training facilities and demonstration projects in other CARICOM countries helping to scale up the use of R-290 air conditioning technology across the region.
The 50 units in Grenada will be provided to:
✔️Training institutes
✔️Secondary schools
✔️IT/computer labs in selected schools (in collaboration with Ministry of Education)
✔️Health centers
✔️Other public buildings (e.g. police stations)
✔️Selected public sites in Carriacou (e.g. TAMCC and MPA buildings)
By installing these R-290 Split Acs which are free of harmful F-Gases, the project works to remove barriers to the market entry of Green ACs, demonstrating their technical and economic feasibility to encourage adoption in both public and private sectors.
