The first York Media Quiz Night took place on Thursday and what a success it was! We had a lovely turnout of both NUJ and non-union members, including recent joiners Bex and Freya.

We also celebrated recent retiree John Gelson who has received his NUJ life membership after 42 years in the union. Current NUJ vice-president Georgina Morris was there to congratulate him in person.

Our three teams all got into the spirit of SpeedQuizzing, with The Dim Betweeners coming 15th of 20 and NUJ York finished a respectable 9th.

But well done to The BFFs who leapt ahead in the music round thanks to a winner-takes-all question and managed to hold their place, finishing 1st overall!

We will definitely be organising another event next year - let us know if you’d like to stay informed.

It’s our first York Media Quiz Night this Thursday (18 June) - and we’ve a new venue!

The quiz will now take place at The Ackhorne, just off Micklegate, a stone’s throw from where we were due to be.

The start time will be 8pm but we’ll have tables reserved from 7pm so we can all mix and chat beforehand.

Entry is £2 for all and there are prizes to be won!

What a wonderful turn out for our May branch meeting! We had three new members to the branch plus one first timer for an online meeting. And we got through all our business in 45 minutes.

There might have been some gloomy bits of industry news from attendees but there was plenty to be positive about - more people joining the union, lots of events and organising, one new life membership confirmed and one baby on the way!

We have five online meetings per year plus an in-person AGM and social events in between. Our next Zoom gathering will be on Thursday 16 July at 6.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to speak and given an opportunity but no one is obliged.

Keep an eye on your emails for the reminders and link - they tend to come from the NUJ Manchester office. Let us know if you haven’t been receiving them.

Calling NUJ members in the Hull and East Yorkshire area - we're coming to meet you!

Branch officers from both the York and Leeds branches are hosting a social at The New Clarence on Charles St on Wednesday 3 June.

Join us from 7pm to discuss workplace issues and socialise, as well as whether there might be scope to set up a standalone branch for the region.

Join us for our first ever York Media Quiz Night! Open to all current and former professionals working in the sector, as well as student journalists. No need to be an NUJ member to attend.

You don’t need to come in a team - we can group people up once everyone has arrived. Entry fee is cash on the night but please get in touch to reserve spaces so we get an idea of numbers.
