The recent meningitis outbreak is heartbreaking. My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones, and those still fighting this devastating disease.

As a pharmacist for nearly 20 years, I know how serious MenB is. There is a generation of teenagers and young adults who missed out on the MenB vaccine when it was introduced in 2015. They are now in universities and colleges, in exactly the high-contact environments where this disease spreads.

That's why I've written to the Secretary of State for Health urging the Government to close this gap, with a full catch-up vaccination programme for students and young adults, delivered through universities, pharmacies, and the NHS.

Where a disease has a vaccine, no one should be left unprotected.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the deaths following the reported outbreak of meningitis in Kent. Our heartfelt thoughts are with their families, friends and the surrounding communities at this incredibly difficult time.

We urge students, staff and families to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of meningitis, which can include a high fever, severe headache, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, cold hands and feet, limb pain, and, in some cases, a rash that does not fade under pressure.

Symptoms can appear suddenly and be easily mistaken for flu, a heavy cold or even a hangover, so it is vital that anyone who is concerned seeks urgent medical help immediately.

At Meningitis Now, we are here for anyone who needs information, guidance or someone to talk to during what can be a frightening and uncertain time. You can find more information from https://bit.ly/4rAHm1x or by calling our nurse-led Helpline on 0808 80 10 388, open Monday to Friday.

Thank you to Andrea, who met with me to discuss Meningitis B in teenagers.

Andrea's niece sadly passed away from Meningitis, after she went to sleep with only a headache.

As a Pharmacist, I have seen first-hand the incredible impact of vaccines, especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

While babies born today are vaccinated routinely for Meningitis B, the generation of young people born before 2015 are still at risk.

You can get a private vaccine for teenagers at the cost of £220 but like Andrea I believe we need to do more.
