Domestic abuse can have a lasting impact, long after someone has reached safety.

In our latest blog, we explore how specialist domestic abuse support and counselling can work together to support survivors at different stages of their journey, from immediate safety and practical advocacy to longer-term healing and recovery.

At York Women’s Counselling, we’re proud to work in partnership with IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services) to provide trauma-informed, accessible and long-term counselling for women affected by domestic abuse.

Recovery takes time, and every survivor’s journey is different. Our latest blog looks at why having the right support, at the right time, can make such a difference.

We’re proud to be a small charity making a big difference in our community. This , we’re sharing the impact behind what we do and what makes YWCS so unique.

Did you know we are the only charitable counselling organisation in York that doesn’t impose a maximum limit on sessions?

While many services cap support at 6-12 sessions, the length of our support is based entirely on the amount of time each woman needs to fully work through her experiences. On average, clients stay with us for 15-20 weeks, with progress reviewed every 6 sessions.

We also believe that financial hardship shouldn’t be a barrier to mental health support. In the 12 months up to the end of March 2026, 50% of our clients accessed counselling with support from The Spring Fund - our initiative that ensures women without financial means can still get the help they need.

Every donation helps us keep our doors open and our sessions uncapped. Help us continue this vital community service by donating here: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/25972 #!/DonationDetail

It’s 🎉

Small charities may be small in size, but the impact is BIG. We’re proud to be part of a week that recognises and backs the work happening in communities every day.

Run by women for women, YWCS provides high quality, affordable counselling for women in York and surrounding areas. We offer a safe and confidential space for women who are experiencing mental health difficulties due to current or past emotional stress and trauma, regardless of their ability to pay.

In the 12 months up to the end of March 2026:
*Our volunteer counsellors delivered over 1000 counselling sessions and over 100 EMDR sessions.
*An average of 37 women every month received counselling support from us.

Here’s what some of our clients have said about the impact of this support:

🗨 “I have become a confident person and I feel I have a voice and have learned to deal with situations rather than avoid them. I have gained empathy. I am ready to go now and deal with stuff better than I did. I don't get anxiety and panic attacks anymore.”

🗨 “I am really grateful to have been able to access this. I have felt a real shift more than any other counselling I have received before in my life. I do believe that is due to having a longer period of time to develop that relationship and to observe patterns.”

As a small charity, we rely on the generosity of our donors. Help us continue our vital work by donating via the link below: https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/25972 #!/DonationDetail

The handset for our Safeguarding phone has sadly given up the ghost. Because this line is so important, we’re looking for a quick replacement. If any of our wonderful supporters have an unlocked smartphone in good working condition that they’d be happy to donate to YWCS, we’d be incredibly grateful!

If you can help, please email us at: [email protected]

A big shout-out to Debbie, who raised £240 for YWCS at a Tropic Skincare fundraiser she recently organised!

As a small charity, every penny counts. To put it into perspective, this incredible amount supports one volunteer counsellor for an entire year, which means one year delivering affordable counselling to a woman who needs it.

Thank you so much, Debbie, and thank you to everyone who attended and donated. Your support is really appreciated!

If you’re interested in supporting us by hosting your own small fundraising event, we’d love to hear from you! Every effort makes a huge difference and helps us continue providing vital counselling support to the women of York.

This , YWCS are proud to share that we’ve signed the York Citywide Volunteering pledge, showing our commitment to creating the best possible experience for our volunteers.

We truly value the time, passion and expertise our volunteers bring to our charity. We believe that volunteering should be a two-way street - benefitting our volunteers as much as it benefits us. We aim to provide an inclusive, stimulating, friendly and supportive environment for everyone.

In return for Volunteer Counsellors supporting a minimum of 2 clients per week, we will offer:

- A full, comprehensive induction
- Regular team meetings
- A contribution towards supervision costs
- Access to ongoing CPD workshops
- The opportunity to be part of an incredible, supportive team of women.

Are you a qualified counsellor or therapist looking to make a difference? We’d love to welcome you to our team. Find out more here: https://yorkwomenscounselling.org/volunteer
