Earlier this week, we welcomed Nigel Corner, High Sheriff of North Yorkshire and his wife Harriet to Shared Story. They are passionate about supporting groups that champion mental health and shine a light on people’s potential.

People spoke about how stories and reading can provide comfort in times of loneliness, trauma and bereavement. One member described Shared Story as “life-changing”, while another shared that it had helped them find a new way of being and a sense of meaning after loss.

We talked about friendship and connection — how sharing stories helps people get to know one another in a deeper way, and how friendships are formed between people of all ages and backgrounds who may never otherwise have met.

One member described Shared Story as “a light in the dark” — words that stayed with all of us.

Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences so openly, and to Nigel and Harriet for their time, kindness and genuine interest in the power of shared stories Two Ridings Community Foundation

At Shared Story, we believe good mental health starts with feeling connected — to ourselves and to each other.

For us, it’s about belonging, kindness, and having spaces where people feel heard without judgement.

Through shared reading and conversation, we use literature to help people connect, reflect, and express themselves in a relaxed and welcoming way.

Research has shown that shared reading can help reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. You can read more about this here: https://bit.ly/4tytHJg

This morning we celebrated spring with a reading from The Secret Garden, a wander in the garden, and some sensory-inspired creative writing. The story’s robin sparked conversations about animals in our own lives and we laughed a lot over stories of mischievous cats. A joyful, reflective morning

Yesterday's poetry walk was a bit of a treat really!

We met in the café to share poems over a brew, then headed out for a walk through the park — spotting tadpoles, pausing by the flowers, listening to the water, and seeing a swan on her nest.

Being in nature brought back childhood memories — stories of ‘Goldie’ and ‘Silver’, two fairies who lived in the park, slow worms, bug-covered windscreens, hot days and rowing across the river Poetry Pharmacy
