This week we welcomed our very first Reimaginings group, and began with an extract from Charlotte's Web.

Here, the story is told from the perspective of a spider, a creature that's traditionally seen as something to be feared. We talked about how a little distance can help us explore things we might find harder to face head on.

We spent time noticing what the world might feel like when you're tiny, then looked closely at objects from nature as if seeing them for the first time

Big welcome to Sam, our new Shared Story director!

‘Hi I'm Sam, I'm a creative writer and PhD student from York, I currently work across the charity and higher education sectors. I have a love of stories, writing, and believe in the transformative nature of stories and story telling. I mostly write short stories, and poetry focusing on horror, animals, and transformations. In my spare time I love to cycle, walk in nature, and surf, as well as read’

Sharing some lines from our volunteer Ley who helped out at our Not a Book Group last week…

It was a lovely group of us who met in the Garden Room - a most appropriate venue for listening to an excerpt from the Secret Garden. There was an autumnal feel to our musings, some of us drawn towards the season, others not so much, and birthdays (and half-birthdays) figured prominently for some of us. Themes of loneliness and connections found in nature were shared and gently raked over

Our new Not A Book Club group met for the first time last week, and it was lovely.

We read Penelope Lively's short story Licence to Kill, which begins as a gentle look at old age, with Pauline and her teenage carer Cally on a shopping trip, and then takes a turn in Marks & Spencer that nobody saw coming!

It got us talking about grandparents. People shared memories that belonged to an age they never lived through but felt like their own because of the stories they were told. We talked about how much our grandparents' generations lived through, and how unimaginable some of it seems now.

We all agreed we could have carried on chatting for ages!

🎤Excited to announce we have a new five week programme starting very soon!

😍'Reimaginings' will focus on how stories help us see things differently. Each week we'll read and discuss an extract together, with time for optional creative activities.

😀 Reimaginings is for adults who aren't working and are either aged 50-64 and/or have a long term condition

📚 Sessions will run in the Marriott Room of York Explore on Monday mornings, starting 5 October (with breaks on 26 October and 9 November).

🍏 Places are free, thanks to funding via York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, using funding from the DWP’s Get Britain Working Economic Inactivity Trailblazer

Lunch at an Abbey with the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire? Yes, really! 🎩✨

Our wonderful volunteer Jane enthusiastically represented Shared Story on Saturday, joining other community organisations at Coverham Abbey, where our work was celebrated and we were thanked, on behalf of the King, by Nigel and Harriet Corner.

As supporters and advocates for the sector through their New Horizons Fund, Nigel and Harriet were there to recognise the difference community organisations make — and we were delighted to be part of it. Thank you all! Two Ridings Community Foundation
