Ryedale Roots, July 2026 edition will feature the villages of Fadmoor and Gillamoor, both in the ancient parish of Kirkbymoorside.
If you have any ancestral connections or stories about either of these villages, please share them with us. Send to [email protected]. The deadline for inclusion in the forthcoming issue is 19th June. Please include any photos. We have several photos of the Church of St. Aidan at Gillamoor, so any people or places are very acceptable.
A note from the editor – My own ancestors populated Gillamoor and Fadmoor, where most of them farmed the land there, so this is very special to me. Names in my family are Wood, Bulmer, Thompson, Potter and more. We were there for a long time!

Did your ancestor leave a will? Some very ordinary people did. Wills can be a very valuable source of family information, where relatives, neighbours, friends and properties get a mention.
Members of the Ryedale Family History Group have been transcribing some local wills since 2017, so we've built up quite a collection. Our index gives the name of the testator (the person making the will), their location, surnames mentioned, names of witnesses too. So it's worth a search to see if there is something there for you.
See our website, www.ryedalefamilyhistory.org for details. The index is a searchable pdf file but please remember that some names have a variety of spellings!

The area of interest covered by this group is that which is now known as Ryedale,as designated by the boundaries formerly administered by the Ryedale District Council, as at our foundation in 2005.
