Celebrating Volunteers' Week Monday 1-7 June

OCAY couldn’t do what we do without our amazing volunteers who bring their diverse life experiences and specialist knowledge in order to help others.

Hear from Neal - Why I volunteer?

“As a volunteer for OCAY I really like the flexibility”

We’re delighted to welcome Wayne Dawson as new charity director who joined us in April 2026.

With 15 years’ experience in the voluntary sector Wayne is driven by a desire for fairness, advocacy and helping people find their way through systems that can too often feel complex, inaccessible or unfair.

Wayne commented “It’s an honour to join OCAY at such a critical moment, particularly in our 25th year. I have seen first-hand some of the challenges faced in trying to deal with services and systems and look forward to help champion the voices of older people in York.”

New video showcases OCAY’s vital support that is changing lives for over-50s in York

When life gets overwhelming, it’s not always obvious where to turn.

Financial hardship. Confusing systems. Communication barriers.

No support network. Digital exclusion. Not knowing your rights.

These challenges stop people from getting the help they’re entitled to every single day.

Our new video shows how we step in when it matters most and the real difference that support can make for over 50s in the York area.

Something important is coming this Thursday … a new video you won’t want to miss.

Financial worries aren’t a distant problem; they are happening on our streets and in our neighbourhoods.

Across the country, 2 million older people are struggling and here in York, we see the impact - worsening physical conditions, anxiety, and the strain on mental wellbeing.

Gild Master Bruce Harrison is walking York’s Strays to raise funds for our work and shine a light on the wellbeing benefits of green spaces.

His third walk took place on 7 May at Monk Stray.

The weather was kind as ten people explored Monk Stray, including pausing beside Heworth Golf Club and the boundary stone close to what used to be Elmfield College.

Bruce provided a fascinating historical narrative which gave context to modern day uses of the Stray.

We were delighted to have the company of the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Martin Rowley BEM who walked with us, later joining York City FC in their 'lap of honour'.

Look out for the next Stray walk on Thursday 4th June 2026
Bootham Stray - Meet at 10am at Clarence Gardens at the junction of Haxby Road and Wigginton Road – next to the bowling green. Do join us!
