Engaging students in real-world development challenges helps bridge the gap between theory and practice, encouraging critical thinking about identity, inequality, and social change. Through open discussion, students begin to explore how global issues are experienced in everyday life.

James Gold from Good Neighbours UK recently delivered a guest lecture at York St John University as part of the first-year Sociology module, Identities. The session formed part of an employer panel designed to help students explore how identity and social inequality are experienced in contemporary society, and how organisations respond to these challenges in practice.

The session was very well received, with a lively and thoughtful Q&A where students engaged directly with the challenges of translating policy into real opportunities.

This experience highlights the value of development education in inspiring the next generation to think critically about identity and inequality, and to consider how more inclusive systems can be built.

How far would you walk for a single glass of clean water? 💧

Before our intervention, more than 500 women of Galwache and Wassoua in northern Cameroon had to walk 3km every single day just to access water for their families.

In collaboration with Good Neighbours Cameroon we constructed two boreholes, giving over 1,000 people reliable access to safe drinking water. This has led to

✅ Significant reduction in water-borne diseases (from widespread prevalence to around 30%).

✅ 97% of community members improved hygiene knowledge and practices.

✅ Reduced burden on women and children, freeing time for education, livelihoods, and wellbeing.

How do you share life-saving health information with communities where most people can't read?

You go to them — in their language, through pictures and audio they can see and hear and understand. 💙

We're so proud to announce that Good Neighbours UK, in collaboration with Good Neighbors_Niger has partnered with Education Saves Lives to launch 11 health lessons in Zarma, one of the most widely spoken languages in Niger. These lessons cover vital topics like maternal health, immunisation, breastfeeding, and malaria prevention among others.

To celebrate York International Women’s Week, Good Neighbours UK joined hundreds of volunteers to take part in YorKits annual workshop in the glorious York Minster

Together we produced 127 washable feminine hygiene kits that will be distributed to girls in developing countries, allowing them to participate fully at school.

Around the world, an estimated 500 million people lack access to menstrual products and adequate facilities to manage periods safely and stigma stops girls from attending the school, which results in loss of education.

Good Neighbours UK’s partnership with Yorkits, a project run by Ainsty York Rotary club, enabled 27 girls from Hamadallaye in Niger to receive a hygiene kit along with awareness raising on menstrual health management in October 2025. Neighbors_Niger

We dealt with mid-week blues a little differently today.

Every Wednesday morning, women from the York Rotary Club and volunteers come together to make feminine hygiene kits in York so that girls in developing countries can beat period poverty and get an uninterrupted education. They are also supported to make their own kits to become self-sufficient and have an environmentally sustainable supply.

Child Clubs create safe spaces where children build confidence, make decisions, and define what development means to them. Through participation, they develop into empowered young leaders who help shape a more inclusive society. 🌱
In 2023, Good Neighbours UK and Good Neighbours Ghana partnered with the University of Manchester to better understand and address the causes of teenage pregnancy in Akatsi North District, Volta Region, Ghana, through a series of community-led social engagement programmes.
When researchers returned in 2025, they found a positive shift in attitudes, with young people increasingly choosing to have children later in life than they had before.
This progress shows what’s possible through child participation and community engagement.
✨ building lasting change.
