What's it like behind the scenes at an international development charity? 🌍✨

This summer, we welcomed two interns, Mollie and Poppy, who dived into our work!

Good news from Niger: the Guernsey Overseas Aid and Development Commission is funding a second phase of our maternal health work in Niger.

In Phase I (August 2024 to July 2025), we worked with Good Neighbours Niger to expand the maternity ward at Hamdallaye Primary Health Centre and train 4 midwives, 4 nurses and 20 volunteer mothers. Here's what changed:

📈 Annual users up 33.7%, from 4,000 to 5,349 women and children
🤰 Fourth antenatal visits up 39%
🏥 Deliveries at the centre up from 112 to 129
🦟 1,000 children under five screened for malaria, 417 treated

Phase II runs for 12 months across Hamdallaye and Gounou Bangou health centres. We'll restore solar power, repair a leaking water tank, build four accessible toilets, and supply an ultrasound machine, warming tables and a centrifuge.

A rug, two bean bags and a pile of books under a tree on the River Ouse.

At the York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge in July, we ran a Quiet Reading Corner. Between races, children came and sat with their parents and read, some for ten minutes, some for more.

Today is International Literacy Day. 739 million young people and adults can't read this sentence, according to UNESCO data from 2024.

Reading is where opportunity starts for the next generation.

As of 27 August 2026, National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Agency in Nepal reported over 165 lives lost and more than 800 people missing. Families, neighbours, and homes were suddenly washed away by the Bhotekoshi floodwaters.

Our thoughts are with the communities of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and colleagues in Nepal who have been touched by the disaster.

Our partners, Good Neighbors International Nepal and Good Neighbors International, have been working actively on the ground to help and support people affected by the devastation, delivering urgent relief to families in temporary shelters. Working alongside government authorities and local partners, we are ensuring timely support reaches those who need it.

We stand in solidarity with all communities affected by the floods and remain committed to supporting them through emergency response, recovery, and rebuilding: today and in the days ahead.

Today is World Humanitarian Day.
It's a good moment to say thank you to the staff and
volunteers in the UK who support our work through sponsored runs, making sanitary kits
to support school girls in in Niger and supporting the organisation and running of our
charity events and our local partners in Gaza and Nepal who deliver hope to children in
the hardest circumstances

On 24 June, two earthquakes hit Venezuela's north-central coast within seconds.

Buildings came down, hospitals and the main airport were damaged, and the death toll has climbed into the thousands, with many more still missing.

A month on, families are still living in tents and stadiums turned into shelters. Power and clean water remain patchy in the worst-hit areas, and aftershocks keep interrupting the recovery.

Good Neighbors is mobilising an emergency response with local partners on the ground. The focus: emergency shelter, food, child protection, and basic health care for families in need.

We'll share updates as the response develops.
