Star Throwers Star Throwers provides an individually focused support service for cancer patients and their carers. Why the name Star Throwers?

Star Throwers is a cancer support charity based in Wymondham, Norfolk dedicated to helping people affected by cancer. We support individuals to make informed decisions about their treatment options, including alternative treatments, and help them search for clinical trials when appropriate. We also offer complementary therapies, counselling, nutritional advice and lymphoedema support to people with cancer and their loved ones. All of our services are completely free of charge but this is only possible thanks to the support of individuals and organisations donating and fundraising to help us to deliver these services and continue to improve the wellbeing of those affected by cancer. It is based on the following short story:

"After a heavy storm, a boy walked along the beach throwing the stranded starfish back into the sea. A man watching shouted "there are too many of them - it won’t make any difference." As the boy threw another starfish back into the sea, he smiled and replied "it made a difference to that one!"

October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, a chance to raise vital awareness to improve early detection of liver cancer and show support for those affected.

The Liver Cancer UK charity have a support line where you can speak to a specialist nurse, an online community and support groups. https://livercanceruk.org/support-for-you/ and Star Throwers are always here for you.

⭐ Secondary Cancer Support Group ⭐

Star Throwers are pleased to reintroduce our Secondary Cancer Support Group.

The group is open to anyone living with Secondary Cancer and will provide a safe space to allow people to connect with others, share experiences and find support.

The first group will be on Monday 9th November, 10:30am-12pm. It will run on the 2nd Monday each month going forward.

⭐️ THE WIG ROOM ⭐️

The Wig Room is a completely FREE service for anyone experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment, offering a welcoming and private space to explore wigs and head coverings with support and guidance.

Our next Wig Room will take place on Thursday 29th October, appointments are available 11am, 12:15pm & 1:30pm.

October is ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’.

Learning how to check your chest is important to help identify changes early. We can all make a difference in raising awareness.

Here at Star Throwers, we support many people affected by breast cancer. As well as our nurse information sessions, we have a monthly ‘breast cancer café’ led by Jane, one of our trained volunteers. It is an informal session, a safe space to have a chat with coffee and cake!

Jane also runs ‘in my shoes’ for people who want to talk to someone one to one who understands what it is like to go through and live with the consequences of cancer treatment.

The ‘Moving Forward’ course, run by the Breast Cancer Now charity is being held in Star Throwers 11th and 18th November. This is designed for anyone diagnosed with primary breast cancer. You’ll be given the tools you need to move forward with life after treatment.

We also hold Keeping Abreast Meetings where you can find out more about breast reconstruction following breast cancer. The next meeting is to be held on 14th October.

If you have been affected by breast cancer, come and join us for a cuppa and a listening ear.

There are lots of ways you can get involved – you might like to:
🎟️ Come along and join us – bring your family, friends or colleagues and enjoy an event while supporting Star Throwers.
🙋‍♀️ Volunteer – if you have some time to spare, we’d be delighted to have an extra pair of hands.
🎁 Donate a prize – if you or your workplace have a prize, raffle item or experience you could donate, it would make a wonderful contribution to our fundraising.

Star Throwers has a variety of groups and sessions in October all of which are free to attend.

All sessions are held at our Cancer Support Centre at 30 Melton Road, Wymondham.

If you would to attend Colour Confidence or The Wig Room these do require booking. All other groups are drop in and no booking is necessary.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

This week we celebrate Valarie, our amazing volunteer. She has been with Star Throwers for 10 years!

Valarie volunteers at our main Charity shop in Wymondham Town centre. We couldn't do what we do without the vital income from our shops our retail team work tirelessly to support our charity.

The session is a powerful, uplifting experience that blends gentle self‑care with practical guidance.

People affected by cancer often say:
“I don’t recognise myself anymore.”
“I’ve lost my sparkle.”
“I don’t know what suits me now.”
A colour confidence session gives them:
A sense of control
A moment of joy
A reminder that they are still vibrant, stylish, and whole
It’s not vanity — it’s identity, dignity, and emotional healing.
