With exams finishing and the school term coming to a close, NOW is the time to talk to your teenager about water safety.
Worried they won’t listen? This guide shows you how to say it so they will.

Don’t miss the conversation that matters most.

Talking to teenagers about safety can be tricky - especially when you want to guide them without lecturing. RLSS UK’s 'Have The Conversation' Toolkit is designed to help you start calm, realistic conversations about water safety that teenagers are more likely to listen to.

Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK

Remember the Water Safety Code: If you fall in, stay calm, float on your back and call for help.
Cold water shock can happen to anyone, even on a warm day. Your instinct might be to panic, but the best thing you can do is float.
🛟 Tilt your head back and keep your airway clear
🫁 Relax and focus on your breathing
🌊 Spread your arms and legs to stay balanced
🤲 Gently move your hands if needed
📞 Once calm, signal for help or swim to safety

If someone else is in trouble, don’t go in. Throw them something that floats.
Learn the Water Safety Code and share with your community this Drowning Prevention Week: www.rlss.org.uk/water-safety-code

The Water Safety Code is the fundamental spine of all water safety education. It is designed to provide simple and easy to remember information that acts both as a proactive measure to help people to educate everyone across the UK and Ireland to make early, critical decisions and also to help people...

How to talk about being safe online

Why you should talk about being
safe online
Setting up parental controls is a useful way to protect children from viewing or downloading harmful content but it cannot completely protect them.

Talking to your child about being safe online can help build trust and lets your child know what to do if they are worried or if something happens that makes them feel unsafe.
