Sustainable Woodstock. Oxfordshire. UK

Sustainable Woodstock. Oxfordshire. UK Community group focused on raising awareness and leading local campaigns on climate, nature and transport. Our Story.

Inclusive, friendly group welcoming support, collaboration and partnership throughout Woodstock and Oxfordshire. Sustainable Woodstock is a community group managed and supported by local volunteers. Our aim is to encourage local individuals, families, businesses, organisations and elected representatives to better understand the climate and nature emergency and take action by working together to r

educe greenhouse gases, reduce pollution and promote nature recovery. We offer opportunities for volunteering and promote sustainable practices by encouraging the support of activities, projects, campaigns, lobbying and the sharing of knowledge and ideas, and also by networking with other local climate and nature recovery groups. Sustainable Woodstock consists of its “members”, “supporters”, “Steering Group” and “Working Groups”. Established in 2008 by Colin Carritt, we are one of 117 Community Action Groups (CAGs) that make up the Oxfordshire CAG Network (https://www.cagoxfordshire.org.uk); We hope you can try to support a way of living that leads to a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come. We also support the aims of lobby groups including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion XR - non-violent direct action to compel government action on climate breakdown, nature loss, and the risk of social collapse. Steering Group members include:
Ed King - chair, contact for community orchard
Colin Carritt - founder, vice-chair and active travel
Hilary Brown - communications, contact for community orchard, Plastic Free Community
Graham Brown - treasurer, renewable energy and contact for community orchard
Darrell Marchand - renewable energy and energy conservation
David Rees, Bob Pomfret - woodland management and bio-diversity
David Walker - website and active travel

💚🌍🌳VOLUNTEERING Community Woodland and Orchard
Saturday 13th June 11.00 - 13.00 Details Below

Weather is set fair on Saturday. It's Green Week, we're in the orchard so come and celebrate. Take care through the traffic works near the entrance to the community woodland. June happens to be more of a social month in the orchard as there's not a great deal to do at this time of year but we should check on individual trees for pests and maintain the "tree circle" under the canopy as weed-free. The more energetic may wish to help with some hedge management near the entrance of the woodland under David's supervision. So let's catch up with each other, exchange ideas and share some coffee, tea and biscuits ... picnic even?

If unable to join us ... please don't worry, there will be many opportunities. You mentioned an interest in volunteering but there is no commitment. If you no longer wish to be listed please DO NOT unsubscribe but drop us an email, as you will lose the newsletter as well once you unsubscribe. If things change, then you can email again and we can re-add your name.

If you know of anyone who may like to add their name to the Orchard and/or Woodland "Friends" please ask them to email.

NATURE RECOVERY
We're having a very dry spring and now a very warm spell - If you received a free tree from us during the FREE TREE GIVEAWAY or if you recently planted a tree/shrub of your own or during the last couple of years ...remember to water regularly during their first 3 years during dry spells. They can need up to 50 litres per week over the summer! Rain water is best, but if using tap water leave it outside in a bucket for 24 hours beforehand for the chlorine to evaporate. Try this link from RHS https://www.rhs.org.uk/garden-jobs/watering #:~:text=Water%20newly%20planted%20trees%20and,for%20up%20to%20three%20summers. Also, if you noticed a new tree planted near where you live or work then between you and a neighbour perhaps you could keep an eye on it this summer. The tree will repay you if nurtured a little now.

WILDLIFE may need a little extra help during dry spells; birds, hedgehogs and bees are active right now and so you can help by putting a dish of water out for them (and refresh regularly) and maybe you can help further by installing a hedgehog highway. https://www.hedgehogstreet.org/help-hedgehogs/link-your-garden/

Did you receive a tree from us as part of the Oxfordshire Garden Tree Giveaway? We would love to know how it's doing and receive a picture of it in leaf or flower. Also let us know the year you received it if possible.

Email your photos to [email protected]

We expect to help run the giveaway again this year and will be offering single garden trees and hedgerow packs to applicants.

This Sunday at 3pm Woodstock and Bladon Churches Together are gathering to celebrate Pentecost. Pentecost—often recognised as the "birthday of the church"—as a profound symbol of Christian unity. Meet in the Woodstock community orchard (near the shelter) for a service at 3pm. If feeling energetic, after the service you can also join others in a 4 mile round trip walk to Wootton.
