Like many people of my generation, I grew up watching Friends.

It’s one of those rare and iconic shows that’s lasted for decades — and now McDonald’s has launched the Friends Meal to tap Into that nostalgia.

What fascinates me most is how a 90s sitcom still connects across generations. In our team, with people of different ages, backgrounds and experiences, it sparks the same reaction: laughter, memories, and passionate debate over favourite characters.

So I asked them: What’s your favourite line?

Mine is from Chandler (my favourite character): “I’m not great at the advice, can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?’

I’ve now had two constructive meetings with local MPs to discuss the government’s Employment Rights Bill — most recently with Catherine West MP, and Bambos Charalambous MP before that.

The Bill received Royal Assent last month and has now become an Act — and the coming weeks and months will be crucial as the government consults on and shapes the legislation.

We're also expecting the first of the measures to come into force in April this year, including the removal of the waiting period for statutory sick pay.

Ultimately, my message to both Catherine and Bambos was: of course employees must have fairness and security at work. But this must be balanced with measures that are proportionate, practical and workable for employers.

Hospitality faces a very specific set of challenges. Alongside ongoing cost pressures, demand fluctuates sharply throughout the year and we operate in real time — where last-minute changes are often unavoidable, for example when staff fall ill at short notice.

That’s why it’s so important that proposals around guaranteed hours contracts and short-notice shift changes properly reflect the realities of our sector.

I know many colleagues across McDonalds are having very similar conversations with their local MPs.

I’ve been encouraged by the engagement and understanding shown by both Catherine and Bambos, and I look forward to continuing to work with them as these measures progress this year.

Here in Wood Green we are very excited about the McDonald’s Secret Menu 👀

We’d long heard the rumours about customer hacks and creations… now the powers that be have made them official.

Naturally, I put my team to the test with a blind taste challenge...

As Chairman of Wood Green Business Improvement District, I’m constantly struck by the rich variety of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants surrounding us.

They make areas like ours colourful and vibrant and they deserve our support.

Small Business Saturday is an important reminder — and that message needs to continue all year round.

So it was great to be out on the high road with Bambos Charalambous MP encouraging people to shop local throughout year.

Let’s make 2026 the year we back small, local business.

The whole point of my work as Chair of Future Wood Green BID is to make our town centre cleaner, safer and more welcoming for visitors and shoppers. And we are fortunate to have a supportive, committed and energetic partner to help us achieve this – the leader of Haringey Council Peray Ahmet. From better street lighting to events like our weekly Christmas markets, the progress is down to our collaboration and shared ambition. Thank you Peray!

Last weekend saw the launch of Wood Green Winter market. It’s organised by the Business Improvement District and will run every Saturday until Christmas. These initiatives are important because they bring people into our local area who then spend money in our shops and restaurants.

Next one is tomorrow - if you live in or around Wood Green please consider popping along and supporting our high street!

Thanks to the team at Future Wood Green BID and Haringey Council Leader Peray Ahmet for your support.

I employ nearly 500 people across my McDonald’s restaurants — and last year’s hike in Employers’ National Insurance added around £200K to my operating costs. That money could have funded at least eight new starting salaries, along with the training, development, and career progression that come with every new job we create.

While the instinct may be to raise taxes further in next week's Budget, I hope the Chancellor considers that doing the opposite would help create jobs, thereby raising revenue for HMRC and stimulating spending on our high streets.
