The Frenchman won seven of the season’s 16 races, including four of the season’s final six races, but that was not enough and Lauda became a three times World Champion by a mere half a point at the final round, the Portuguese Grand Prix. Prost won the race, but Lauda’s second place was enough to clinch the championship.
