Not all remembrance stories are being created in Windsor itself… and that’s exactly what makes the Windsor Community Poppy Project so special. 🌺

A huge thank you to Rosina, the wonderful ladies of Maidenhead Trefoil and the Boyn Hill Monday Knitting Group, who together have now created an incredible 1,592 poppies for the project.

That is hundreds of hours of knitting, crochet, conversation, tea, laughter and community spirit - all contributing towards something much bigger than a display.

We love that the project is already reaching beyond Windsor, connecting neighbouring communities through creativity and remembrance. Every single poppy represents somebody taking time to remember, reflect and contribute.

Thank you all for being part of it. We are genuinely blown away by your support. ❤️

Where do you make yours? 🌺

One of the loveliest things about the Windsor Community Poppy Project is that you do not need to live in Windsor to be part of it.

Following contributions from Durham and Brighton Beach, our latest poppies are now arriving from even further afield — including Pauline in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and Carol, who was quite literally crocheting mid-flight on her way to Spain!

Every poppy carries a story, wherever it is made. Thank you to everyone helping this community project grow, one stitch at a time.

Fun Fact Friday 🌺🧶

Ryan Gosling learned to knit while filming Lars & the Real Girl after spending the day with a room full of knitters teaching him the basics. He later called it “one of the most relaxing days of my life”.

Proof that knitting is not just creative, it is calming too.

So why not channel your inner Ken and help us create Windsor’s community poppy display for Remembrance 2026?

Whether you make one poppy or one hundred, every stitch counts.

Too cute not to share immediately for maximum 'aw' factor! Willow is taking the shade in the poppies, her dog-mum Maggie is one of the longstanding 'Our Maidenhead' group of communi-crafters and has been involved in all of their wonderful creative projects over the last 4 years.

Today is the last day that the group meets in its original location, due to the imminent closure of the Nicholsons Centre, but have been kindly temporarily 'rehomed' at the Community Centre, 4 Marlow Road from next week. Everyone welcome - perhaps pop in to ask about Maggie's famous textile sausages that she crafted for a Foodshare project. (Not sure what Willow would think about them...!)

Thank you to all of the lovely communi-crafters - and keep cool in this heat.

Sheila's target: 100 poppies. Sheila's total: 103. 🌺
That's the GoodGym Windsor and Maidenhead spirit right there - and exactly why we love working with community groups who bring real heart to everything they do.

A brilliant achievement from an incredible maker - and a shining example of what happens when brilliant community groups get behind something meaningful. They're a group of local residents who run, walk and cycle to help out community projects and older people across the area - and they have always helped Craft Coop Maidenhead and the Maidenhead Town Show.

Thank you Sheila, and thank you to everyone at GoodGym Windsor and Maidenhead for your incredible support over the years. This is Windsor and wider remembering together.

Did you know.... Poppies have been linked with death, sleep and remembrance for centuries, long before they became the modern symbol of remembrance. In Greek mythology, poppies were associated with deities such as Demeter, Hypnos and Thanatos, which helped connect the flower with rest, grief and eternal sleep.

The idea is that poppies were seen as a natural symbol of the boundary between life and death: they appear soft and beautiful, but their meaning in ancient stories was often serious and sacred. In Greco-Roman tradition, poppies were also used in funeral rites and as offerings to the dead, reinforcing their connection with honouring those who had passed away.

That ancient symbolism carries through to remembrance today. After the First World War, the poppy’s meaning shifted into the modern remembrance tradition, but the deeper themes of sleep, sacrifice and eternal memory were already well established in classical mythology.

Every handmade poppy helps build a powerful community tribute — let’s reach 10,000 together
