Whether you’re just beginning or fluent in French, we welcome all Francophiles with a passion for French culture. 🥖📚

We meet monthly at St Peter’s Pastoral Centre Hall, where you can enjoy fascinating lectures, starting at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 7pm for a friendly welcome drink. 🥂

Our vibrant community also gathers for a French book group, festive events like our Christmas and summer parties, and much more! 🎉📖

Supported by the Alliance Française de Londres, we are part of a global network that celebrates the beauty of French language and culture with events and activities throughout the year. 🌍

🇫🇷 𝗨𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗲, 𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗶𝗿𝗲… 𝗲𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀 !

Hier, le Cercle Français a eu le plaisir d'accueillir Isabelle Schloesing, ancienne présidente de notre association, pour une conférence passionnante sur la Statue de la Liberté, ce cadeau emblématique de la France aux États-Unis.

Des difficultés financières rencontrées par Bartholdi aux prouesses techniques de Gustave Eiffel, en passant par les dimensions impressionnantes de la statue et les histoires méconnues de l'immigration française aux États-Unis, nous avons fait de belles découvertes !

Saviez-vous que Walt Disney avait des origines normandes, liées à la commune d'Isigny-sur-Mer ? Une conférence riche en anecdotes qui nous a rappelé combien l'histoire de nos deux pays est étroitement liée.

Un immense merci à Isabelle pour ce voyage historique passionnant, et à tous les participants pour leur présence !

Yesterday, the Cercle Français welcomed Isabelle Schloesing, our former President, for a fascinating talk about the Statue of Liberty, France's iconic gift to the United States.

From Bartholdi's fundraising challenges to Gustave Eiffel's engineering contribution, and from the statue's impressive dimensions to the lesser-known stories of French immigration to America, we discovered so much more than we expected!

Did you know that Walt Disney had Norman roots, linked to the town of Isigny-sur-Mer? It was a talk full of fascinating anecdotes and a wonderful reminder of the close historical ties between France and the United States.

A huge thank you to Isabelle for such an engaging journey through history, and to everyone who joined us!

Join Le Cercle Français de Wi******er for our first lecture of the season!

In 1863, a bold idea was born: a monumental gift to celebrate American democracy and promote republican ideals. From its conception by Auguste Bartholdi to its installation in New York harbour, speaker Isabelle Schloesing will guide us through the incredible story of "Lady Liberty", the beacon of hope for millions of immigrants.

Our annual Fête de la Bastille is back on Sunday, 12th July (12pm–5pm) at The Warren Centre, Micheldever Station. Spaces are limited so contact us shortly!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱: A delicious French Garden BBQ by Wild Ones of Wi******er (think marinated sausages, Dijon chicken, honey halloumi, and French sides). Soft drinks provided, BYOB wine/beer!

🍷 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰̧𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆! 🍇

We had a brilliant turnout for last night’s fascinating talk on Bordeaux, beautifully presented by Maryse Wright.

Maryse told us that it was part of England from 1152 after the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet - later Henry II - until 1453 when it was lost to France at the end of the Hundred Years War. She touched on its history as a port, both for the export of claret and, later, its importance during the colonial era and its involvement in the slave trade. The 18th century was its siècle d'or, when the old city was refashioned and modernised, something continued in recent years when its mayors, especially Jacques Chaban-Delmas - mayor for 50 years ! - and Alain Juppé turned it into the exciting tourist destination that it is today.

A huge thank you to Maryse, who pitched her talk perfectly in wonderfully clear French. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to!

What a treat!

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for such a fascinating talk about the artistic links between Turner, Whistler and Monet. It was a pleasure to see so many engaged faces!

A special thank you to Pascale: her delivery was so clear and her pronunciation was a treat to listen to. We all came away feeling very inspired.

Join us this Thursday, 16 April at St Peter's Church Hall for a journey into the world of light and colour. We are thrilled to welcome 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗲 to discuss the revolutionary work of 𝗝.𝗠.𝗪. 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗿 and his profound influence on the father of Impressionism, 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁.
