3rd Wigton Sea Scout Group 3rd Wigton Scout Group has 5 sections: Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Explorers Just Add Water! Living the adventure in Wigton since 1957. Everyone’s welcome.

Our Leaders have a combined experience in Scouting of over 100years. We have 4 sections: Beavers (5 ¾ - 8 years), Cubs (8-10 ½ ) Scouts (10 ½ -14) & Explorers 14-18. As a landlocked Sea Scout group we aim to provide our youth members with every opportunity to experience adventures both on water and land. Many of our meetings are held in the great outdoors that surround us in beautiful Cumbria. Sc

outs are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers. Yes, we go camping, hiking, sailing, abseiling, cycling and canoeing. But it is also a time to hang out with friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges. As Scouts, we believe in preparing young people with . We bring communities together and contribute to society. We encourage our young people to do more, learn more and be more. Above all, we aim to build better futures by giving young people the skills to succeed:
• Character skills like resilience, initiative, independence and tenacity
• Employability skills like leadership, teamwork and problem solving
• Practical skills like coding, cooking and First Aid. All genders, races and backgrounds. Regardless of your child’s physical ability – there’s a Scout adventure out there waiting for them. And we’ll help them find it. Help your child discover their ‘thing’: from abseiling to coding to performance art and everything in between by contacting us via the Email or Message Us links.

Scouts & explorers patrol challenge last week was to build a barrel cart from large plastic barrels, ropes and poles. Great teamwork exercise improving their communication, problem solving and decision-making. Once the carts are completely finished the plan is to race them next week.

Cubs & Beavers made the most of the great outdoors with some wide games out on the field giving everyone plenty of space to run, laugh, and let off steam. The Beavers also took on some team building challenges - including the magic carpet (turn the tarp) and getting into height order without speaking (not as easy as it sounds!).

🌿🐿 Squirrel Scouts – Green Week 🐿🌿
Last week, our Squirrel Scouts celebrated Green Week with lots of nature-themed fun and learning 🌱
Sparrow started the session by reading “Roxy the Butterfly Garden” 🦋, setting the scene for a week all about growth, change and caring for the environment.
The Squirrels then got creative, making their names using natural items they had brought in from home 🍃🌼
The Squirrels then were able to see the differences in the butterfly garden and chatted about how their tomato plants planted earlier this term are growing 🍅 and whether they have seen any insects setting up home in their bug hotels 🐞.
Ending with another lovely story, “Caterpillar Dreams”, bringing our Green Week to a calm and thoughtful close 🌿

At the tail end of May half-term our Scouts & Explorers had a fantastic full weekend, packed with water activities!
They took to the water on Bassenthwaite Lake and the southern end of Ullswater, building their canoeing and kayaking skills while developing stamina and confidence. All of this is in preparation for their upcoming two-day paddle on Loch Ken in Scotland later this month – exciting times ahead!
In true Scouting style, the adventure didn’t stop there – they also enjoyed an overnight camp on our Scout woodland, making the most of the outdoors and the great weather.

Fantastic triple birthday celebration District Camp last weekend at Ratlingate Scout Camp site! We joined Cockermouth Scout Group, 11th Workington (Harrington) Scouts, Seaton Scout Group , 2nd Maryport & 1st Workington, meeting old and new friends.
We were incredibly lucky with the weather and so proud of our Squirrels, Cubs and Beavers, who threw themselves into every activity - overcoming fears and showing real determination (if at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again!).
From the cave trailer, archery, laser tag and woodland adventure, to wheelchair basketball and the pet encounter (who knew an armadillo could be so cute?!), there was something for everyone. And of course, the ever-popular inflatables and Jason the Juggling Jester, who wowed us all with his amazing fire show!
It truly was a fabulous weekend from start to finish. A huge thank you to everyone who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to organise this incredible event for over 300 young people, leaders and parents from North Fells District Scouts —the food shopping alone must have been quite the logistical challenge!
Alongside our amazing team of leaders, a big shout-out goes to all the parents who volunteered their time over the weekend—putting up tents, helping in the kitchen, supporting activities and then packing up and cleaning afterwards.
We hope everyone had a fantastic, memorable weekend!

🐿️🚲 Squirrels World Bicycle Day 🚲🐿️
Our Squirrels showed great independence as they rode their own bikes in the safe space of Rosley Village Hall car park. 🌟
We then took part in a litter pick around the park, doing our bit to help look after our community. 🌍♻️
After all that effort, it was time for some well-earned play, followed by badge presentations and the investiture of our two newest Squirrels – welcome to 3rd Wigton Squirrel Drey! 🧡
A little wet, but lots of fun and smiles all round! 🌧️😊

Beavers Heads or Tails Hike – Wigton Adventures! 🦫🥾
Last night's “Heads or Tails” hike definitely kept things interesting! 😄
For anyone wondering, a Heads or Tails hike is where the Beavers flip a coin at each junction to decide which way to go – heads for one direction, tails for another. It means no one knows exactly where they’ll end up… part of the adventure! 🪙🌲
One group followed the trail all the way to the play park – perfect for a well-earned bit of fun! 🛝
Meanwhile, the other group had loads of fun when they ended up at the railway station bridge. 🚉
Each group had copies of a street map to find their way back to the hall! 🗺️👏
Great teamwork, lots of laughs, and a brilliant adventure all round. Well done Beavers! 👏

🐿️ Squirrels Navigation Fun! 🗺️
Our Squirrels had a brilliant time last week as they worked towards their Navigator Stage 1 badge.
They started by spotting familiar places on a map of Wigton, then it was time to get creative, as they each had a go at drawing their own maps.
A fun and energetic North, East, South, West game to help introduce the Squirrels to the four main compass points. 🧭
The Squirrels put their new skills into practice by navigating themselves around a giant outdoor map.
Well done everyone – you're all well on your way to becoming expert navigators! 🌟

Last Wednesday evening, our Beavers had a fantastic visit to the Innovia Films Research & Development site in Wigton completing their Digital Maker badge.
A huge thank you to Innovia Films for hosting us, and especially to Chloe Watters from the HR team for organising such a brilliant visit. We’re also incredibly grateful to all her colleagues who volunteered their time to make the evening so much fun.
The Beavers (and their Leaders!) had an amazing time learning about the different uses of technology within the factory. Chloe had organised so many digital related activities including:
💻 Designing their own banknotes
💻 An energetic barcode treasure hunt
💻 Creating their own Access ID badges
To top it all off, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the delicious buffet provided.
A truly memorable evening—thank you again to everyone at Innovia for making it so special! ⭐

What a fantastic evening our Cubs had completing their Backwoods Cooking Badge. Out in the great outdoors with the sun shining, they got stuck into some brilliant hands-on cooking.
On the menu:
🐟 Fresh trout cooked the traditional way in newspaper
🍊 Delicious chocolate brownies baked inside oranges
☕ Hot chocolate brewed in a billy can on a tripod over the fire (although they definitely didn’t need warming up in that sunshine!)
Many thanks to one of our Cub parents for helping us source the food, especially the trout.
