Wigan Speakers Club Improve Your Public Speaking and Become a Better Leader

06/03/2026

Good attendance at last night's meeting.
Jackie gave us some tips on effective speaking.
We had a speech on labels: 'Is the label in your pants, Prada or Primark?' and an insight into the workings of Rotary International and acrobats!
The topics session was good fun, as always, with mini speeches covering - Be Yourself, You're never too old to learn something new, and Every journey begins with a single step, amongst others.
Next meeting is Thursday, 19th March.

A fun night was had by all this evening at our final February meeting. We welcomed regulars, guests and new members.

The cornerstone of the night was most definitely corners.
We learnt how to be confident, and if you aren't, then 'Fake it till you make it'.
Is a hot dog a sandwich? Should you clap when the plane lands? Does pineapple belong on a pizza, and should you keep your ketchup in the fridge?
We were advised to pause and consider before answering a text, and...to be more daisy.

I know...intriguing isn't! If you are curious about Wigan Speakers Club or think that we could help you improve your confidence, send us a message, or just come along to our next meeting.

A fun meeting this week as ever. We welcomed guests, returning members and potential new members.
We had talks on alternative modes of travel delivered by Shirley. Mark introduced us to the connections between Mary Wolstoncraft, Mary Shelley and Ada Lovelace and Jackie entertained us with tales of Barclays Bank archives. Add to that some evaluations and a topics session, including a blood bath and an intriguing tall cupboard... with a lock (IYKYK).

Are you curious? Thinking about attending, but not sure what to expect?

Here is an outline of our meetings

We meet at Fur Clemt, Montrose Ave. There is ample car parking. The room is warm, and tea/coffee is available if you wish. The group is friendly and welcoming.

The group is small enough to allow regular speaking practice without intimidating new members.

We have two or three speeches each week on a variety of subjects. You choose what to talk about when it's your turn, and there is advice on speechwriting, too. The speeches are evaluated by the group in a supportive, positive manner. to enable you to improve.

We finish with a 'Topics' section. One person arranges this per meeting. Each person gets a topic to talk about, and there is no prep time, which creates a sense of fun. Sometimes the topic ignites something, and you can talk for a while, and sometimes nothing comes to mind, and that's fine.

There is no pressure to deliver a speech until you feel ready to, it's fun to listen to others and pick up tips for when you take the plunge.

Is it for you?
Do you need to speak to groups as part of your work? Have you got an event coming up and are dreading delivering a speech... a wedding, perhaps?
Are you nervous about making your views heard during meetings?
Then YES!

Are you looking to improve your Public Speaking skills? Perhaps you’re looking to enhance your leadership skills?

Wigan Speakers Club has been a proud member of the Association of Speakers Clubs (ASC) since 2005.

We have members of different ages and backgrounds. We also welcome all ranges of speaking ability.

We welcome members from complete novices through to experienced speakers. Some of our members join to overcome nerves ahead of an upcoming presentation at work or in preparation for a wedding speech. Other members join to fine tune their already established skills.

At ASC you learn important public speaking techniques, and develop into a confident and compelling public speaker and leader!

Practise making presentations/speeches in a structured but supportive and friendly environment.

As you learn new skills and your ability improves, so will your confidence.

You’ll always receive constructive feedback and as you develop as a public speaker, you can also take advantage of the ASC’s personal development pathway which will help you take your skills as a speaker, a presenter and a leader to a new level.

And if you’re really nervous at the thought of public speaking, don’t worry, we know what that’s like and we’re here to support you.
