So proud of 26 of our young players who excelled at the Lancashire Junior Tournament today at Hope School in Wigan. We had 7 award winners too including Saanvi who won the overall event and Gobishan who was runner up👏👏

All our young chess players tried their hardest throughout the day and were a credit to our club. Well done!

Thank you also to Lancashire junior chess for organising the tournament and to our parents, friends at Atherton Chess Club , Preston Junior Chess Club , Leyland Junior Chess Club and Rossendale junior chess for helping out on the day.

A great success!

♟️🔥 THE BIG GAME - ATHERTON vs WIGAN*🔥♟️

What a night of chess! 26 boards. 52 players. One massive friendly between two great local clubs.

After all the planning, the players took their seats and the boards were set for what we hoped would be the biggest single match in the history of Atherton & Wigan chess.

And this time, Wigan took the honours, winning the match 17–8, with two draws along the way. 👏

Congratulations to Wigan - a fantastic result! 🏆

But the score is only one part of the story. There were 26 games happening side-by-side, with plenty of competitive battles, interesting positions and some hard-fought chess throughout the evening.

A huge thank you to everyone who played and represented Atherton, and to everyone who helped make the night happen.

We might have lost the match...

But 52 players around 26 boards? That's a win for local chess. ♟️❤️

And we're already looking forward to the next one. 😉
