♟️🔥 THE BIG GAME - ATHERTON vs WIGAN*🔥♟️

What a night of chess! 26 boards. 52 players. One massive friendly between two great local clubs.

After all the planning, the players took their seats and the boards were set for what we hoped would be the biggest single match in the history of Atherton & Wigan chess.

And this time, Wigan took the honours, winning the match 17–8, with two draws along the way. 👏

Congratulations to Wigan - a fantastic result! 🏆

But the score is only one part of the story. There were 26 games happening side-by-side, with plenty of competitive battles, interesting positions and some hard-fought chess throughout the evening.

A huge thank you to everyone who played and represented Atherton, and to everyone who helped make the night happen.

We might have lost the match...

But 52 players around 26 boards? That's a win for local chess. ♟️❤️

And we're already looking forward to the next one. 😉

THE BIG GAME - ATHERTON VS WIGAN - 17th August 2026

What a fabulous night of chess - 26 Boards - 52 players - and lots of fun! Chess players from across the Borough came together for the challenge night of the year. We were especially pleased to see many of our junior players competing against adults and coming out on top. Wigan won the challenge this time - scoring 17-8, including two draws.

Thanks to Atherton Chess Club for organising the evening and to all our players who took part. Here's to the next challenge event!

On Monday 17th August, Atherton Chess Club will take on Wigan Chess Club in what we're hoping will be the biggest friendly chess match either club has ever played.

Our aim is ambitious: 30 boards. That's 60 players enjoying an evening of competitive, friendly chess.

The best part? You don't have to be a league player or a chess expert to take part. If you know the rules and fancy a game, we'd love to welcome you. Even parents of our junior members are encouraged to join in!
