Today is International Day of the Midwife 🤍

This year’s theme, One Million More Midwives, highlights the urgent need for more midwives across the world and the importance of supporting and retaining the skilled workforce we already have.

At Wigan Borough Maternity Voices Partnership we hear time and time again how vital midwives are to families across our communities. From providing safe, compassionate care to advocating for informed choice, their role is fundamental to positive experiences in pregnancy, birth and beyond.

But we also hear the challenges pressure on services, staffing shortages, and the impact this has on both families and those delivering care.

Today is an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and amplify the voices of midwives, while continuing to listen to and represent the experiences of the families we serve.

Because safe, personalised and compassionate care depends on a workforce that is valued, supported and able to thrive.

International Women’s Day 2026 |

At MNVP, we see every day how powerful women’s voices are.
When women and families are listened to, services improve, experiences change, and care becomes more compassionate and responsive.

This year’s theme reminds us that when we give space to lived experience, we gain better maternity and neonatal services for everyone.

Today we celebrate the women who share their stories, the professionals who listen, and the communities working together to shape safer, kinder care. đź’ś
