STROLLERS SUNDAY 20th September

Our next Sunday Strollers Walk is on Sunday 20th September, starting from The Star Inn, The Street, Steeple, CM0 7LF, please meet at 10:00am for a 10:30 am start, before setting off on the walk, we can order and pay for our lunch at the pub. Car parking is free and is at the rear of the pub. The walk, of about 4.0 miles, is partly along tarmacked roads, through Steeple Bay caravan park and then out along Mayland Creek and the River Blackwater, an estuary where oysters have been gathered for over a thousand years. As we make our way along, keep an eye out for wildlife, including flocks of dunlin and knot, along with curlew and redshank searching for food in the mud. The trail can be muddy at times, depending on weather conditions so care is needed with footing and appropriate footwear is required.
Highlights include wonderful views over the River Blackwater and a flat, easy-to-follow path.

Maritime Group.

Monday September 7th – talk by John Johnson-Allen via Zoom on Rosslyn Wemyss, Admiral of the Fleet: The Man Who Created Armistice Day. The life of a Naval officer from 1877 to 1919 through peace, war and then peace who managed the successful evacuation of 140,000 troops from Gallipoli and, later, was the British Naval representative at the Armistice negotiations.

Maldon and District u3a are very pleased to announce the first meeting of the new Leaf/Flower Pressing group. The first meeting is on Tuesday the 8th of September from 10am until 12 at Unit 2 Brickhouse Farm, Poulton Close, Maldon. Parking is free. Tea and biscuits are being provided by group coordinator Bob Adams. Please contact Bob on 07518380188 if you would like to attend.

Strings Attached u3a band had a great turnout for this afternoon’s u3a meeting at Wickham Bishops Village hall. Fifteen members assembled on stage and played a varied selection of songs from our large songbook to entertain the audience.

At our monthly meeting on Monday 17th August 2026 we have:

Our own u3a ‘Strings Attached ’ group with a selection of songs from their growing song book to entertain you. Audience participation is a must!

Followed by a talk entitled ‘Action for Family Carers’ by
Rebecca Loader. Action for Family Carers is a local charity which has been supporting carers in Essex for decades. It was founded by Carers for Carers and has been making a positive difference to the lives of unpaid family Carers ever since.

New Group Alert: Leaf & Flower Pressing:

Are you interested in pressing leaves and flowers to make pictures or decorations? If ever you go to Blake's Wood or the ancient woodland of Holybred Woods in Little Baddow and see a chap collecting fallen leaves, it's me!

If you see a chap at the Maldon Men's Shed constructing flower presses then, again, it's me! Over the years I have collected several books that describe the various techniques
and have produced pictures from pressed dried leaves.

To date my flower pressings have not been very successful, but this is something as a Group we can try. I am hoping to secure a venue for meetings then arrange collection days for collecting samples of leaves and flowers.
