Two more birds - one ringed Nan Ron August 2024 and retrapped Sule Skerray, Orkney July 2025 (343 days duration, 58km), and one ringed at Cruden Bay Aberdeen July 2024 and recaptured Nan Ron July 2025 (duration 392 days, 193km).

The latest batch of records - probably the last for this year. In all we have received records of 77 birds - all rung and recaptured on Nan Ron. The duration between ringing and recapture acts as a proxy on breeding - either on Nan Ron or very close to. It is considered that if there is a gap of at least four years between the ringing /recapture events one can assume you are handling a breeding bird.
(Although we talk age we are simply adding title to the duration between handlings). One bird was 17 years old and one 14, eleven were 11 years old, two yo, one 8yo, three 7yo, eight 6yo and nineteen 4yo - all of these birds must be breeders.
Nineteen birds were caught at one, two and three years; all of which could be breeders but more likely non-breeders or wandering juveniles. The rest were all same year retraps.

Lots of on-island recaptures also coming in (as Ringers put their details into the database). I'll post the more interesting ones when I've collated them all.

Details of the Norwegian bird caught on 31 July 2025 have just come in. It was ringed as a 4 on 5th August 2024 at Alnes, More og Romsgal, Norway. So 360days between captures at a distance of 710km between the island and Alnes. I would suggest this is a non-breeding adult, as for a capture on ENR in July would be late for a Norwegian breeding bird. It should have been 'home' at least a month earlier.

Ringing stormies at night leaves the day for other activities. Part of it us just absorbing the history of the island - more of that later - but also there is seawatching, exploring geos, seeking out caves (both at low-tide and by boat) and participating in communal eating sessions, this year a Cheese and Port event.

Other birding highlights consisted of two Snipe nests with eggs (unlike last year no chicks were about) and a pair of Ringed Plover with chicks - which were too mobile to ring.

One bird that was on the island but we were unable to ring due to an embargo from Nature Scotland (as a consequence of vastly reduced numbers due to AI) was the Bonxie. We came across one chick, thought at least two more were present - we didn't search them out - but some birds had almost certainly fledged.

In addition to ringing Storm Petrels we also ring other suitable bird species. This year we managed to ring several young s**g and oystercatchers plus, at 3.10am on our way back from a stormie session, two Great Black-backed Gull chicks.
