My name is Franceska McCullough and I'm an artist intent on creating a holocaust memorial to remember the estimated 11 million Jews, Jehovah's Witnesses, Gentile Poles, Roma/Sinti/Travellers, Homosexuals, disabled people, political prisoners, Africans and other persecuted religious peoples killed during World War 2. Originally I started my project focusing on the 6 million Jews due to a family con
nection which I hoped to offer a better memorial to. Now I feel compelled to try to bring communities together around the world so that our differences stop being something that divides us but rather brings us together with a common cause and desire for peace. I want to use my project as a teaching tool so we all learn to value all human life, regardless of who we are, what we look like, where we come from or what we believe in. My project is about humanizing an incomprehensible number so that I can fully appreciate and understand what 11 million lives looks like and never forget the unique individuals they all were. The hands I'm collecting each represent one life killed during World War 2 so I've been asking for everyone interested to please position their hands cupped together, palm side up which gives a universal message of peace to the dead they represent as well as hope to children I want to help nowadays who are caught up in war torn parts of our world. I've connected my project with the charity, War Child in an effort to generate funding towards children needing help now. I want my project to be about remembering the dead but also bringing about hope to younger generations in places where wars are endangering young lives and future generations.
