Our trip to Champs Hill was followed by a visit to Parham House. We enjoyed the wonderful gardens and the beautiful interiors of the house where the ground floor rooms are presented as they would have been in different centuries.

The upper gallery offered superb views of the surrounding countryside.

We were delighted to hear the story of Henry Bishopp (1605–1691) who was the second son of Sir Thomas Bishopp, 1st Baronet of Parham.

Henry was from Henfield and it is believed that he hid in a priest hole with his dog when Cromwell’s troops attempted to capture him. He escaped to America and on his return the King appointed him as Postmaster General of England. He was the inventor of the first postmark used on mail.

Our afternoon was completed with a cream tea in the Elizabethan kitchen.

The Art of The Newlyn School

We enjoyed a private visit to this brilliant exhibition at Champs Hill near Pulborough.

There are works by several artists who painted at Newlyn. The photos give just a taste of the works that are on show. The local people often acted as models for the artists and several paintings depict the harshness of the times and also the sadness that comes with the loss of life at sea.

We benefitted from lovely weather and could also enjoy the Champs Hill gardens and the sculptures together with amazing views of The South Downs.

The exhibition is open to the public 16th-18th and 23rd-25th June. See the Champs Hill website for more information.

Our thanks to Justin Reay for such an informative and interesting talk about Sir Christopher Wren.

We all think of St Paul's Cathedral but there are so many other buildings where his influence and skill can be seen

Our thanks to Sarah Jaffray for a most fascinating and informative lecture yesterday.

We were given an insight into the work that precedes the creation of an artwork and from this a greater understanding of the artists' thought processes.

This work by Van Dyck included narrative about his meeting with the artist Sofanisba Anguissola when she was 96.
