A small HCA workforce cleared up some scruffy areas at Kings Gap gateway yesterday. See before/after photos.
We are concentrating on this public area as it is so central to Hoylake life.

In line with our drive to improve the tidiness of our streets to match the excellent work of the HMiB volunteers, attached are the Council’s planned schedule for routine road cleaning.
This should help us all keep on top of things!
Thanks to Cllr Max for the info.

A second clear-up on Monday in the Kings Gap area from the Roundabout towards the beach - doing our bit to improve our town gateway.
17 bags of weeds, twigs, sand and assorted rubbish from the kerbs and feature walls.
Complementing the great floral displays from HMIB this might encourage home owners and perhaps local businesses to follow the lead and keep their surrounds tidy and attractive.

Following up on our previous post about the need to keep our key features and spaces clean and tidy, we want to reach out to seek help from those who are able and willing to do so.

Good work is already being done by the ‘In Bloom’ and ‘Wirral Wombles’ groups, but we want to encourage everybody to do a little bit near where they live. If we all took an interest in the immediate area outside our own homes, we would see a measurable improvement. This might be:

- Collecting small items of litter and rubbish (particularly plastic and cans)
- Reporting larger items for clearance by the Council
- Removing dead leaves and vegetation
- Removing weeds and overhanging growth from pavements, walls and kerbs

We realise that not everybody will be able to get involved like this, but it may be that there is a WhatsApp or other resident group in your road which could show its collective pride and take this on. We do hope so, as we’ll all feel better.

In parallel, we have gained the support of our Councillors Andrew and Max to engage with shops, businesses, fast food outlets and schools to see if we can reduce the litter problem at source. If we can, then this would be a real community effort where everyone would reap the benefit.

Like us, we wonder whether you’ve noticed that some of our landmark places are often not looking at their best – as if, collectively, we didn’t care. Not just litter but leaves, weeds and other debris in the kerbs, untidy grass verges leading to blocked drains, and benches covered in moss next to overflowing bins.

Council services are stretched and under pressure and do their best – but we think some sustained community effort is needed as well.

In addition to the excellent litter-picking work of the volunteer Wirral Wombles group, other local clear-ups and the inspiring garden work of the ’In Bloom’ teams, we think we could all do a bit more in our immediate vicinity.

HCA has undertaken to start the ball rolling by tidying the public realm at Hoylake Roundabout in the morning of Monday 16 February, after collecting nearly 7kg of rubbish in the Kings Gap area last Monday. But we are also hoping that more people can play a part by picking up cans, bottles and other litter, perhaps taking a particular interest in the road right outside their own house.

The government is launching a ’Pride in Place’ initiative by giving out some funding to selected neighbourhoods. We are unlikely to receive any of that, but we can surely take more pride in our own area and the places we value. Could we encourage small groups of residents to act as patrons for their road or cul-de-sac? If you think, as a community, we can do better, please give this a try. HCA feels sure it would help considerably.

In parallel, we hope to engage with local convenience stores, shopkeepers and fast food outlets to take particular care of their immediate surroundings, helping to limit litter at source and present their premises in the best possible light. What does everybody think?

If you agree with us and want to help, please do it in your own way – we are not trying to over-organise anyone.

There is a lot we can all do by starting small, keeping going and setting a good example.

We have formally objected to planning application APP/25/01927 at Clavis, 96 Meols Drive.

The proposal involves extensive demolition and large extensions to the historic building to form six apartments, together with the construction of two new houses within the former garden, resulting in nine dwellings on a single plot within the Meols Drive Conservation Area.

We are objecting to this application as it constitutes inappropriate and harmful development that conflicts with the special character of the Conservation Area, as defined in the adopted Meols Drive Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan (2025). In particular, the proposals would result in harmful plot intensification, excessive scale on the golf course edge, and harm to the setting and integrity of the historic building.

Residents have started a public petition, which can be viewed and signed here:

The planning application can be viewed, and comments submitted, via the Council’s planning portal:

Stanley Road Links Boundary

You will be interested to note that a planning application (APP/25/01413) has been submitted by RLGC on behalf of the R&A to replace the deteriorating fence which runs between the two existing access points. The new fence will be of see-through metal mesh and marginally higher than the current fencing and is designed to be more secure.
We view this as a welcome refurbishment without compromise to the conservation area or to the views over this open space.
