If you’re planning to get a new fence installed this year, please ask your supplier about including one or more hedgehog holes. It’s an easy and valuable way of giving hedgehogs access to the gardens (and potential mates) they need to survive and thrive. If you don’t leave a gap, you may be accidentally cutting them off from their own territory. There is great information on the Hedgehog Street website, linked below in the comments.

And if you’re a landscaper or fence installer, please feel free to contact us so that we can help you with making your work hedgehog-friendly!

New homes for sale! The clever members of Screveton Shed have been building bird boxes and hedgehog houses. The hedgehog houses are for sale at £35, and the group would like to give away a couple of the bird boxes. Please contact Angie on 07443 573 737 if you’d like one. You can learn more about the group and see pictures of their work on the Screveton Shed page.

We’ve had a lovely update about Herbert, who was cared for by one of our volunteers in the autumn of 2025. He was very tiny and had to be hand-fed for a while, before being released back in Gamston where he was found. He’s making regular visits to the garden he was released in, and has even made a friend!

We’re thinking about Lady Bay Hedgehog Highway plans for this year, so if you’d like help with making your garden hedgehog-friendly, please email us - [email protected]

Remember to check for hedgehogs if you’re having a bonfire over the weekend. Thank you.

This week, make it your mission to spread the word about the harm bonfires can cause to our garden wildlife.

We've put together top tips on how best to reduce the risk of harming this - please share it far & wide!

This is Herbert, who came in for some care because he was found walking along the round in Gamston, and was very tiny. He was kept warm and hand fed to help him build up his strength. It didn’t take long until he was able to help himself to food - which helped him put on some weight. Herbert grew from 87g on arrival in early September to 445g in less than a month! He’s now been released in a safe location in Gamston. We wish him well!

Little Harry, who we mentioned in our last post, was released back into the wild in Keyworth last month - hopefully he is busy finding somewhere sheltered to spend the winter!

Meet Harry, who has arrived for some rehabilitation care after being found trapped in garden netting. Luckily he was found in time to get help, but if there is netting in your garden, have a think about whether there are ways you could replace it with more wild-life friendly options. Harry is a young hedgehog - we think he’s about six to eight weeks old. Hopefully he’ll be back out in the wild soon.

It’s going to be hot and dry for the next few days, so if you’ve got a garden and can put out water for hedgehogs and other wildlife, please do. You might even get a visit from this one!

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to one of Lady Bay’s newest and youngest residents: a hoglet! This one was out and about with his mother in a garden on Pierrepont Road last week.

We’d love to help you make your garden hedgehog-friendly - please email [email protected] to find out more. There is no charge for any of our services.

Here is a Lady Bay hedgehog in action! Thank you to Lisa on Lady Bay Road for this brilliant video. Lisa and her family built a little house/feeding station after talking to our volunteers at the open gardens event, and they’ve already had at least two separate visitors.

It’s going to be another hot and dry week this week, so if you’ve got a garden and can put out water for hedgehogs and other wildlife, please do. You might even get a visit from this one!

Thank you to everyone who came to see us at the Lady Bay Open Gardens event last weekend. We met so many kind and caring people, and we’ve already had feedback from one family that they’ve both spotted and supported a hedgehog since talking to us! More on that in another post.

With your kind donations and purchases of plants and books, we raised £160. This is already being put to use to care for two young hoglets who are currently being looked after, ready to return them to the wild. Thank you from Herman and Hettie!
