Traffic-free routes can change how people feel about moving around locally. Without the noise and pressure of cars, walking and cycling become calmer and more enjoyable. The Greenway aims to create that kind of environment, where journeys feel less rushed and more comfortable.

The Grand Western Greenway should be seen as an hybrid urban solution, not just a rural one. The route will connect neighbourhoods, housing developments, town centres, and transport links. At its heart, this is about improving movement within a growing urban area of over 100,000 people in Taunton & Wellington

Routes that work well are usually the ones that support everyday needs first. The Grand Western Greenway is not being planned as a destination in its own right, but as a practical connection between places people already travel to regularly. When a route helps people get to work, school, shops, and town centres safely, it naturally becomes part of daily life rather than something only used occasionally or for leisure.

Think of heritage landmarks like the Nynehead boat lift, and old canal bridges telling stories. That’s the heart of the Grand Western Greenway. We’re still mapping the route, but this imagined trail would bring communities together and let us savour heritage spots while soaking up the countryside. Fancy joining us?

A continuous route between Wellington and Taunton could open up new ways of travelling locally. Whether it’s commuting, visiting friends, or enjoying time outdoors, the Greenway is about making those journeys feel safer and less stressful.

Like many successful greenways elsewhere, this route would be delivered in stages. Each section would build on existing paths and opportunities, gradually forming a continuous connection. This approach allows progress to be made without needing everything to happen at once.

Local knowledge is essential to getting this right. People who live and work in the area understand where journeys actually happen, which routes feel unsafe, and where connections are missing. The Greenway is being shaped with this understanding in mind, helping ensure it works in practice and supports the way people already move around.

Connecting homes, workplaces, schools, and town centres is at the heart of the Greenway idea. Many local journeys are short but currently feel difficult because of traffic or missing links. A continuous route could reduce reliance on cars for these trips and help people move around independently, especially those who don’t drive or prefer not to use a car for every journey.

Good infrastructure supports healthier habits without forcing them. When walking or cycling feels safe and convenient, people naturally choose those options more often. The Greenway aims to make these choices easier by removing barriers that currently discourage people from travelling actively, especially for short, local journeys.

When viewed as a whole, the Greenway connects communities rather than countryside. The rural section plays an important role, but its purpose is to link two urban centres and the many neighbourhoods around them. With a combined population of over 100,000 people, the Greenway deserves to be planned and assessed as a serious urban route, not a fringe rural project.
