🎃 Halloween is meant to be a little bit scary for us humans. But it can be a serious stress point for the animals too.

At Animals In Need, we spend a lot of time getting to know animals who have had a difficult start in life. For some rescue dogs, the world can already feel a little overwhelming. Add strangers at the door, costumes, unexpected noises and a garden full of spooky decorations, and Halloween can be a lot to deal with.

And it’s not just our pets who can be affected.

A few things worth thinking about before the cobwebs go up this week…

🐕 For dogs who find the world a bit much

Not every dog wants to join the Halloween fun. If your dog is nervous around strangers or startled by sudden noises, give them somewhere quiet to retreat to, away from the front door. They don’t need to meet every little vampire who knocks, and they certainly don’t need to wear a costume to join in.

🕸️ Those fake cobwebs aren’t so harmless

Stretchy plastic cobwebs, hanging ribbons and fine decorative netting can be dangerous for wildlife. Birds, hedgehogs and other small animals can become tangled in them, sometimes with devastating consequences. Keep decorations well away from places wildlife might visit, and skip anything that could trap a curious creature.

🍬 The aftermath matters, too

Sweet wrappers, lolly sticks, plastic spiders and broken glow sticks can end up scattered along pavements, in hedges and in gardens. A tiny piece of rubbish to us can become a choking hazard or something an animal swallows. A quick clear-up the morning after can make a real difference.

🦔 Think beyond your front door

If you’re decorating the garden, check for wildlife before moving things around, lighting fires or disturbing piles of leaves. What looks like a brilliant spooky display to us might be somewhere an animal has settled down for a bit of peace and quiet.

Halloween can still be fun, colourful and wonderfully daft without making life harder for the animals around us.

🌾 Remember our hay appeal? We need a little more help!

Back in August, we appealed for hay to help feed the farm animals at Pine Tree Farm. Thanks to everyone who supported us, but caring for so many animals means we get through an awful lot!

Our horses, ponies, donkeys, goats and pigs all need feeding, and keeping those hungry mouths happy is an ongoing job.

If you’re able to donate hay or contribute towards the cost, we’d be so grateful. Every bit of support helps us keep the animals in our care fed.

Small pets, BIG personalities. Meet our guinea pigs!

Guinea pigs might be small, but they bring a surprising amount of character to a home. From their excited little wheeks when they hear the fridge open to their enthusiastic opinions about dinner, these lovely animals have plenty to say for themselves!

They’re sociable, curious little creatures who enjoy having company, exploring their surroundings and getting to know the people who care for them. With patience, gentle handling and a little time to settle in, you can discover just how much personality is packed into those furry faces.

But guinea pigs aren’t just a pet for the kids to look after, or an animal to pop in a small hutch and forget about. They need space to explore, plenty of hay, fresh food, daily care and a suitable home where they can feel safe and comfortable.

At Animals In Need, we always rehome guinea pigs in pairs or groups because they need the company of their own kind. They also need suitable indoor accommodation, away from draughts, and somewhere secure to enjoy the grass when the weather allows.

If you have room in your home for a couple of little characters, why not consider adopting rather than buying?

It’s certainly a day for putting the kettle on and staying cosy. ☔

Our dogs would probably agree, although some are still more than happy to head out for a walk, whatever the weather. The muddy paws afterwards are just part of the deal! 🍂

Here at AIN, we have dogs waiting for a home of their own. Each has their own personality, their own little ways, and so much to offer the right person or family.

Rehoming is about finding that right match. Someone who’ll get to know them, give them time to settle in and make room for them in everyday life. The walks, the sofa time, the companionship… and, of course, the occasional soggy dog shaking themselves dry just when you thought you’d escaped the rain.

😔❤️ Just look at these little faces!

These lovely rats were found dumped in a box in an alley, left with the rubbish. It’s so sad to think that anyone could leave them like that.

Thankfully, they’re now safe with us at Animals in Need and getting the care they deserve.

They’ve had a pretty awful start, but they’re safe now, and we’d love to find them a kind, loving home where they’ll be cared for as they deserve. ❤️

📋 Home checks are required and arranged through our coordinators.

🐾 Cats leave vaccinated, microchipped and neutered, with insurance and a rehoming pack.

💷 Minimum donation is £75 for an adult cat or £200 for a pair of kittens.

🚫 We don’t offer single kitten adoptions and we cannot place kittens in homes with children under 5 yrs (adult cats can live with younger children).
