You don't have to be an expert to support someone experiencing domestic abuse.

Sometimes the most helpful thing you can do is listen and let them know you believe them.

Try not to ask why they haven't left or pressure them into making a decision. Leaving can be complicated, and for some people it can increase the risk of harm.

Instead, let them make their own decisions and offer practical support where it's safe and wanted.

If you're worried about someone, you can also contact us for advice about how to support them.

Domestic Abuse Awareness Month is about all of us knowing how to recognise abuse, and knowing how to respond.

Gaslighting can make someone question their own understanding of what is happening.

It can involve repeatedly denying things that happened, dismissing someone's feelings, changing the story of events or telling them that they're imagining things or overreacting.

Over time, this can affect someone's confidence in their own memory, judgement and decisions.

Gaslighting doesn't always happen on its own. It can be part of a wider pattern of emotional abuse, coercive control or other abusive behaviour.

If you've started questioning yourself because of the way someone treats you, you can talk to us. You don't need to have everything figured out before asking for support.

This Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, we're helping to shine a light on the forms of abuse that aren't always visible.

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month

Throughout this month, we'll be sharing information about domestic abuse, the different forms it can take, how to support someone experiencing it, and the support available.

Domestic abuse isn't always easy to recognise. It can involve controlling who someone sees, where they go, how they spend money, what they wear, who they speak to or how they use their phone, as well as physical or sexual abuse.

You don't have to be certain that what you're experiencing is domestic abuse to seek support. If something doesn't feel right, you can talk to us and explore your options.

Our office can be contacted at [email protected] or on 01925 417138 during office hours.
For immediate support you can call the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 2000 247

It can feel difficult to open up about what's happening, particularly if you're worried about who might find out.

When you access support from Warrington Women's Aid, the information you share is treated confidentially. We won't share information without your consent unless there is a safeguarding reason or another legal requirement to do so.

If you're unsure about confidentiality or what happens when you contact us, you can ask. We're happy to explain.

The word 'refuge' can bring up lots of questions, especially if you've never encountered a refuge service before.

Refuge provides more than somewhere safe to stay. Alongside accommodation, people can receive practical and emotional support, help with safety planning and support to plan for what comes next.

If you're unsure whether refuge is right for you, you can talk to us about your options.

Not knowing what to expect can make reaching out for support feel even more daunting.

Your first appointment is a chance to talk things through and understand what support may be available. You don't need to have the right words or know exactly what you want to happen next.

We'll listen without judgement and work with you to understand what feels right for you.
