The imprisonment of 77-year-old Jimmy Lai, who now faces a lengthy prison sentence, is a disgrace and a blatant attack on freedom of speech and press freedom. An elderly publisher is being punished simply for standing up for democracy.

This is political persecution, plain and simple. China is openly breaching the Sino-British Joint Declaration, an international treaty it is legally bound to uphold.

The UK government must now act – not just issue statements of concern. That means robust diplomatic pressure, targeted sanctions against those responsible, and international action with allies to hold China to account.

If we fail to defend the rights guaranteed to Hong Kong, we send a dangerous message that international agreements – and basic human freedoms – can be ignored without consequence.

A messsage to my Hong Konger friends ...

My heart goes out to everyone affected by the catastrophic fire at Wang F*k Court, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The tragedy has claimed at least 55 lives, left dozens injured and many still unaccounted for.

To all in Warrington with family or friends there — please reach out, check they are safe, and share this message to raise awareness.

Bowel cancer affects many people, please support this event if you can.

Also home testing kits can be sent through the post. Most importantly see your doctor if you have any concerns

Talk Hub CIC are delighted to provide local people with an opportunity to play at Widnes DCBL stadium on 23rd November, whilst also promoting awareness around bowel cancer symptoms, screening and prevention.

There will be chip butties, cupcakes, fun games to play on the day for all the family as well as information stalls.

Come and along and help raise awareness.

Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to a better world must never be forgotten. We also take this moment to honour the members of our Armed Forces, veterans, and their families who continue to serve our communities today.

As we lay wreaths and pause in silence, let us renew our shared commitment to building a more peaceful, compassionate, and fair society — the very values they fought to protect.

We will remember them.

ROAD CLOSURE

Melton Avenue/Belvoir Road - effective from tomorrow, 7th November. The Borough Council has issued a road closure notice for a period not exceeding 21 days.

This is an emergency closure to enable United Utilities access to repair a leaking main in the carriageway.

The alternative route is via Belvoir Road Granby Road and vice-versa.

Since 2016, I have consistently lobbied the Borough Council about the dreadful state of Broomfields and the unequal treatment of our South Warrington residents in terms of access to decent leisure facilities south of the river. Unfortunately, I have made little progress and the long-standing excuse is lack of funding. Together with my fellow Liberal Democrats, I continue to lobby and press the case.

Warrington Liberal Democrats are working with our MP for South Warrington, Sarah Hall, to continue to champion the cause in Westminster.

I continue to optimistic that we will eventually have a leisure centre that is fit for purpose in the South of Warrington and that Broomfields will be part of this picture.
