Reports from our bailiffs that the River Lee Navigation is very coloured and water levels are up, stating the obvious with the weather we have had and the rain looks to continue.
If you are venturing our take care on the bank. Enjoy your fishing

Despite the weather we have had recently, the cold wind and rain anglers have been out and about on the Towpath Fishery. Catch reports have been conspicuous by their absence. How have the venues been for you if you are one of the lucky ones managing to get out and about?

Wishing all the Anglers fishing the Towpath Fishery venues a happy, healthy and relaxing 2026. Of course have a successful and enjoyable time spent fishing.

It's been a memorable autumn already for Britain’s perch anglers, and whilst most of the fish reported have been caught from reservoirs, one man has enjoyed superb running water action. Over the last few weeks, Wayne Edwards experienced a remarkable run of perch catches on the River Lea, capped by this 5lb 6oz fish. It’s believed to be a record for the southern waterway, eclipsing a 5lb 2oz fish landed a few years ago.

Additionally, Wayne’s landed three fish over 4lb, plus 12 different specimens over 3lb. “I woke up expecting to be fitting a front door for a customer, but had the job called off due to the weather,” he told us. “I grabbed some leftover bait and headed to the river, where I fished maggots and chopped worm over groundbait.”

After catching some bream, roach and small chub, Wayne moved to an area where he’s caught big perch on previous sessions. “There were two anglers there, but they didn’t mind be dropping in by the next boat down, where I presented a live bait on a legered paternoster rig,” he revealed. “After catching a pike, I recast and 20 seconds later had a little drop back bite. I thought it might have been another pike, but when a big perch surfaced, I knew it was a bit special.”

However, it wasn’t until the fish lay on Wayne’s unhooking mat that he realised its true size. “I was buzzing with excitement and was blown away when my scales indicated a weight of 5lb 6oz. “The fish was also weighed on the scales of a passing lure angler, which gave the exact same reading,” he added. “I caught a five-pounder back in 2019 but, to be honest, wasn’t prepared for it, and didn’t have the best quality scales at the time. “I’m pleased to have caught another with better equipment and to have fellow anglers alongside me to witness it this time!”

Well done Wayne!

Our waterways are great places to fish all year round. But as the temperature drops, there are some potential hazards to look out for whilst out on the bank ❄️

🎣 🌡️ Check the Water Temperature!
With hot weather pushing water temperatures up, we all need to think about fish welfare — especially for sensitive species like pike.
🌡️ Take a quick temp check before you fish. If the water’s at or above 21°C, please avoid targeting pike.
✅ Use a simple thermometer ✅ Measure at mid-depth in slower water
There's more info on how water temperatures affect fish and fishing here: https://anglingtrust.net/2019/07/23/how-do-water-temperatures-affect-fish-and-fishing/
Let’s all do our bit to protect the fish we love. 💚

The River Lea Navigation has been producing great results in fish since opening day. Over the weekend and up to today, I have had great feedback from anglers on the River, In the Ware area, especially with catches of 3 lb perch, bream from 9 lb to 5 lb are coming out, and a 25 lb common as well as silvers. It's been great to see so many fishermen getting out on the River Lea and showing that there are still great fish to be caught.
Similarly in the Rye House and Stanstead Abbott’s venues sizeable bream and bags of silvers are being reported.
There is also to mention anglers targeting the carp are managing some excellent river fish.
Enjoy your fishing
