πŸ₯Duckling rescue!

Today we responded to a call from a member of the public who reported that a duckling had been swept under the grill beside the main road and become trapped in the fast-flowing water.

After a couple of rescue attempts, our team managed to create a makeshift ladder using branches, allowing the duckling to grip and climb its way out without having to fight against the strong current.

We’re pleased to say the rescue was a success, and mum and duckling were happily reunited (you can hear mum quacking in the distance) πŸ’›

A big thank you to the member of the public who raised the alarm and helped give this little one a happy ending πŸ₯°

Update on the cygnets 🦒

As we know the Pen was tragically run over last year crossing Station roundabout.

The remaining six cygnets are now fully grown and have their flying feathers but decided to hang around.

The Cob has been attacking the male cygnets so it was decided to move them on. This is usual behavior and occurs when the Cob wants to mate again and/or has young that they are protecting. They will see other swans as potential threats to their territory. This aggressive behavior is also observed in other waterbird species, as closely related species often compete for the same food and resources.

Five of the six cygnets were therefore removed yesterday by Swan Support. The sixth one managed to avoid being caught - Swan Support may try again to catch the last cygnet.

The cygnets have been released at the lake in Hill Head where there are already several swans so hopefully they will settle in amongst them 🦒

If you're down at Hill Head, keep an eye out for them bobbing along the water 🦒
