It was good to be tree planting again today- the first of the planting this winter. We have a couple of locations to 'gap up' or replace, trees which have failed, as on this hedge line.

This is the set of seed processing equipment we received from Cheshire Wildlife Trust . The different grade sieves enable us to separate the berries from the seeds. We did this successfully separate and stratify guelder rose seeds.

Flood alert for our area overnight tonight

Flooding information and advice for the area: Areas at risk include land at the head of the Wirral from Hoylake to New Brighton and including parts of Leasowe and Wallasey.

On Tuesday we visited St George's Primary School upper site to plan the winter planting. We will work with the eco group to plant a hedge along this fence. St George's Primary School & Dragon Club have been awarded a grant from The Tree Council so some of the trees will be purchased and we will provide most of them. A great collaboration with advice from Wirral Council tree team too.

On Tuesday we visited Owley Wood with Cheshire Wildlife Trust and other community tree nurseries. It was too wet to collect seeds and in fact most of the seeds had been taken by wildlife! However it was good to share news, give away a few sweet chestnut to the Congleton group and receive a wonderful gift of seed sieves which we used today!

Did you wonder what we'd do with the Spindle seeds? Well we removed the pink outer, mixed the orange seeds with compost, placed them in a large pot with grit added, then covered with a sand and compost mix. The pot will stay outside protected from animals and checked in the spring when any germinating seeds will be potted on. This process is called stratification.
