🎬New films!

Supporting older people experiencing domestic abuse relies on the skill, care, and commitment volunteers and practitioners bring every day.

To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Dewis Choice has created two short films exploring one crucial moment, how conversations about domestic abuse can begin.

Space to Tell shares an older woman’s experience of what made it possible to disclose.
The Power of Asking focuses on how practitioners can support these conversations safely and sensitively.
Together, they offer practical insight, grounded in lived experience, into what helps someone feel able to share, and how small moments can make a real difference.

If you have 4 minutes, they’re designed to support the work you’re already doing.

The result is never an excuse for abuse.

This World Cup, football will bring people together in pubs, venues, workplaces, community spaces and homes across Wales. But not everyone experiences match day in the same way. Sexist comments, harassment, intimidation and abuse should never be dismissed as "banter" or passion for the game.

White Ribbon UK's Match Day Kit shares practical ways to speak up safely, support others and help create safer, more respectful spaces on and off the pitch.

ROAD TO RECOVERY POST SEPARATION PROJECT WORKER
🌟 Make a Real Difference Every Day 🌟

We’re looking for compassionate, motivated, and reliable individuals to join our team as a Road to Recovery Post Separation Project Worker.

The project will have a strong focus on holistic support for survivors and their children. The programme includes one to one work and group work session where parents who are dealing with post separation abuse will be able to learn about how they can be supported and how they can communicate and work with their children using a needs lead, trauma informed approach. A Road to Recovery Toolkit is being developed as part of this project based on the experience of survivors of post separation abuse.

Throughout May, they’ll be taking on a mile every single day—rain or shine—all in the spirit of commitment, resilience, and making a difference. It’s no small feat, and we’re so proud to have them on board.

This week marks mental health awareness week, a time to tackle stigma and encourage conversations to help people better understand mental health.
The relationship between domestic abuse and mental health is inherently connected, with domestic abuse having complex and long-lasting impact. A report by SafeLives estimated that only 10-30% of mental health cases linked to domestic abuse are actually identified as being related to domestic abuse, which means victim-survivors are not always getting access to the support needed.
In some cases, this can unfortunately result in su***de. While the extent of domestic abuse-related su***des is largely unknown, there has been a documented increase in the risk of su***de in victim-survivors of abuse. National charity Refuge warns that women in particular are at risk, and that women who experience abuse are twice as likely to experience depression, and estimate that around 3 women a week die by su***de as a result of domestic abuse.
Recently, the Domestic Homicide Report announced that the number of people suspected to have taken their own lives after experiencing domestic abuse was the biggest cause of death for victims, and had surpassed the amount of people killed by their partner for the second year in a row.
The report found that 98 people were suspected of having committed su***de following abuse in the year to March 2024. However, Refuge, said they “expect these figures to represent only the tip of the iceberg as su***des caused by domestic abuse continue to be severely under-reported.”

At West Wales Domestic Abuse Service, we help victim-survivors to access appropriate mental health services, and support them with range of needs. This also includes our team of IDVAs (Independent Domestic Violence Advocate) who provide specialist support to suit individual’s unique needs.

This mental health awareness week, check in on yourself and those around you and know where you can reach out for support if you need it.
