The team had a great day out assisting Durham Wildlife Trust at Mossdale measuring some beautiful Elm trees for a special purpose…

The Great British Elm Experiment, launched by The Conservation Foundation is a long-term project aimed at reintroducing disease-resistant native elm trees to the UK landscape.

By propagating saplings from mature trees that survived Dutch Elm Disease, which killed over 25 million trees, the experiment seeks to understand resistance and restore biodiversity.

It was amazing to see how well the trees were doing thanks to all the hard work from DWT.

Hopefully this means we’ll start seeing more resistant elms back in our woodland mixes in the future thanks to this incredible project.

With thanks to Northumbrian Water

🌳 Celebrating a UK First: Tree Equity-led planting in Bishop Cuthbert, Hartlepool

We’ve just wrapped up four brilliant planting days at Bishop Cuthbert, creating new woodland right where it’s needed most.

👏 Two days with the wonderful Years 3–6 pupils from Clavering Primary School.
👏 Two days where the Hartlepool community showed up in full force to plant in all weathers.

This is the first project in the UK to use the Tree Equity Score to identify where trees are most needed. Hartlepool currently ranks as the second lowest scoring place in England, and this work marks the start of a long-term effort to tackle tree inequity and improve access to nature.

Together we planted:

🌱 1.7 hectares of new woodland
🌱 almost 2,000 trees (including 44 standard trees)

Huge thanks to our partners Trees for Cities, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, THE LINBURY TRUST, Treeconomics, The Woodland Trust, Hartlepool Borough Council and to Living Woods CIC for delivering the planting on site.

🤝Tees Community Forest funded the trees and planting as part of our commitment to bringing woodland into the communities that will benefit most in the Tees Valley. If your school, community group or neighbourhood would like to explore a similar project, we’d love to hear from you.

We’re not stopping here. More planting days are coming up soon in, and we’d love you to be part of it.

Let’s keep growing a greener, fairer Hartlepool 💚
