Most people drive through Stanton Drew with no idea what's behind the churchyard wall.

The Great Circle here is the second-largest stone circle in Britain, beaten only by Avebury, and it's over 4,500 years old. 27 of the original 30 stones are still standing, and you can walk right up to them.

Chew Valley Lake's smaller sibling deserves attention. Blagdon Lake has its own trout fishery, its own birdlife, and a lot less traffic on a Saturday.

The Organic Gardens Loop starts from West End and follows the shoreline, an easy way to spend a summer morning without fighting for a parking space.
