Mystery solved!! Our guest speaker Alessandro Guarniero revealed his chosen film last night - Oscar winner "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" (dir Luchino Visconti 1988). Projectionist Alfredo befriends little TotΓ², teaching him to project films and sharing fundamental human values. Why is it called 'Nuovo?' The village's old cinema burns down and is rebuilt by a "nouveau riche" businessman. Gone is the censorship of the local priest! Films can now show kissing, and women's bare legs and arms - scandalous!

Are you ready for another mystery? Thursday's Italian Club meeting on 18 June will be about Italian cinema, but our speaker Alessandro will focus on one film in particular. He's not giving anything away, so we can only speculate - Fellini, Visconti, or something much more modern? Come to St Giles Ickenham at 7.30 pm to find out!

Bravo Maryse and Martine for Thursday's presentation about our mystery author and screenwriter Marcel Pagnol. As his surname derives from Espagnol he clearly had some Spanish ancestry amid the French. His touching, and sometimes deeply moving, stories about childhood and family relationships in the stunning countryside of Provence are often told in a strong local accent. If you haven't read his books, you might have seen the films Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources - "formidables"!

Last night two Spanish Club members shared their experiences of diving. They quoted David Attenborough who wrote, "I now understand the most important place on earth is not on land but at sea... If we save the sea, we save the planet. We have drained the life from our ocean... The ocean can recover if it is left alone by us." Huge thanks to them for their interesting, colourful and very important presentation!
