Many thanks to Catia Clarke who generously gave her time in preparing and presenting last night's talk on "Marsala Wine, Sicily and The English". Beginning with Horatio Nelson who loved the wine and wished to spend his last years in Sicily - where he was Duke of Bronte in the foothills of Mount Etna - but the call of duty from Queen Victoria saw his return to service and demise at Trafalgar, we then met John Woodhouse and Benjamin Ingham, English entrepreneurs who made significant developments in wine production and marketed the wine effectively in Italy and in England. A journey through time, geography, culture and of course taste - as we finished by sampling a drop of the hard stuff!

An excellent talk in French. Persian and Kashmiri designs were copied and woven - from 1780 in Norwich and Edinburgh, from the early 19th century in Lyon and Nîmes (prompting a heavy Kashmiri influence on provençales fabrics), and later, in Paisley when the development of Jacquard looms enabled a shawl to be woven in a few days, rather than many months. We heard about industrial espionage and the extravagances of Josephine - Napoleon's wife. The Hillingdon Arts Association

Some members may realise that the Paisley shawl has origins in Kashmir, and in the UK it is called after the Scottish town where it was manufactured from 1805. It was worn by women of all social classes. How many of our members know about another important centre of manufacture - Lyon? Join us at St Giles this Thursday 14 May at 7.30pm, or on Zoom if you can't get there.

So that's what it was about! Botanists from Kew Gardens and local groups in Peru have worked closely together for 20 years. When satellite imagery showed up colourful clusters of plants in the Lomas desert, scientists knew those plants were rare and vulnerable , so they had to collect samples to analyse their DNA before they became extinct. How to travel to a fragile area where dust and tyre tracks would choke the plants and create lasting ecological damage? Enter the Brazilian paramotorists, using paragliders and carrying a small motor on their backs to fly 14km to the zone and carefully collect samples.
