Homes matter.

Our Family Voices research shows 1 in 4 families supported by Home-Start in London say their child doesn’t have enough room to play or move around safely.

Practical support matters.

But families told us something else matters too.

They don't just need a better home.

They need someone alongside them.

Someone they trust.

As one parent supported by Home-Start explained:

“I felt seen and cared for during the most difficult times of my life. Their support meant a lot to me. I was in a very dark place, and they made me see a ray of light.”

Home-Start volunteers visit families in their own homes and communities.

They build relationships over time.

They listen without judgement.

They help parents navigate challenges, access support and rebuild confidence.

Because when families feel supported, children thrive.

Yet one in four families supported by Home-Starts in London say their child does not have enough safe space to crawl, play or move around.

That’s not just a housing crisis. It’s a childhood crisis.

Every child deserves a safe home where they can crawl, play, learn, and grow.

But our latest Family Voices research shows that for too many babies and young children across London, home is limiting their development rather than supporting it.

Behind that 1 in 4 statistic are babies taking their first steps between a bed and kitchen unit. Parents creating play spaces on strips of carpet. Families raising children in overcrowded, damp or temporary accommodation.

Poor housing doesn’t simply affect where families live. It can affect children’s development, family wellbeing and how parents’ parent.

Families don’t just need better housing. They need someone alongside them while they navigate impossible circumstances.

That’s where Home-Start’s volunteers make a difference - helping families feel less alone, whatever challenges they’re facing.
