Today we were working near Yockenthwaite in Upper Wharfedale. The task was to remove tree guards from a large enclosure so the saplings can grow on. Many were hidden amongst the bracken so it was a case of "spot the tree guard". They will be recycled and made into various things including garden furniture. It was not the best weather this time and as the rain increased some of us finished early for the day but we still managed to clear a good area.

Today we made our second visit to Ormesby Hall - National Trust and once again we enjoyed glorious autumn weather. This time the task was to clear an overgrown ha-ha and the challenge was to complete the whole length next to the car park. With 12 volunteers and National Trust staff Nick and David all working hard we managed to achieve the goal and the results were very satisfying!

Before and after photos taken by the Ranger, Francesca, of today’s task at Brimham. Great work.

We do the felling for a range of reasons, including helping to maintain the SSSI status of Brimham Rocks which has a unique combination of the rocks, woodland and heather moorland. The felling helps the wide range of specialised plant species to thrive. The felled birch finds a range of uses, both being chipped for use on environmentally friendly paths, plus dead hedges around the property, so everything is recycled and used.

Today we enjoyed an invigorating task at NT Brimham Rocks in beautiful autumn weather. Working for the first time with ranger Chess we cleared a large area of birch saplings to open up views of the rocks and moorland vistas beyond. It was hard work but a rewarding and enjoyable day was had by all.

We returned to Beningbrough - National Trust for today's task on a lovely sunny day. We divided into several groups and completed a variety of jobs including trimming lavender in the walled garden, harvesting potatoes, collecting windfall apples, clearing shrubs in the wilderness area and repairing the paving maze. Our next event is a walk in Nidderdale when we hope the weather will be as good as it was today.

A very rewarding day at Hardcastle Crags weeding some planted hedgerows to help the young trees (six months old) thrive. Hopefully the before and after photos show how overgrown they were. It hosed down after lunch (second time of the year at Hardcastle) so we scurried back for an early, and well deserved, finish.

Today's task at NT Brimham Rocks had to be postponed so instead we made a return visit to NT East Riddlesden Hall to continue removing Himalayan Balsam. It was very warm but we were mostly working in the shade beside the river. There were several groups of us, although the photos show only two, and between us we removed large quantities of this prolific invasive plant.
