Urgent appeal and temporary closure 💔

Due to the heat wave and us battling to feed, clean and help our critical birds we've had to sadly close again.

The reality is our beautiful site b has had a few weak/lethargic birds. Meaning we've put a few in quarantine and are treating just in case.

And a few of the birds being bullied we've popped into larger cooler crates as a temporary measure.

We've also lost a few younger magpies over the past week: our hearts are breaking, but it's this time where they won't all make it, even though we gave them the best start 😢

We've also had to separate the Corvid Hotel into two: we've found having such a large space whilst is great for building flight muscle we simply can't keep a proper eye on all the birds.

It will go back to one unit once they stronger 💪

We are absolutely struggling now: having to buy extra supplies, PPE, dry food, Live food and medical expenses.

My heart is breaking as the next few days like many rescues is going to be a critical time for so many birds.

We are also low on the ground for volunteers meaning we've both had to cut back on our full time jobs: little wages means we find it impossible to keep running.

Many birds will be at risk this week: especially the young or vulnerable 😢

Sharing this again as temperatures rise this week. We are already experiencing issues due to the rising temperatures. Our rescue magpies are really struggling 💔

We've put extra measures in place, but it's heartbreaking seeing our birds and other birds struggling.

If in doubt about any bird please contact your local rescue ✅️

If you see a bird in immediate danger, gasping, fluffed up please contact us or your local rescue.

We are incredibly busy this week at both our sites - topping up waters and feeding.

Corvids struggle with the heat. These temperatures are so high, and they will struggle🥵

Please, please keep waters topped up for your local wildlife, they REALLY need you right now.

Daily DAVE! "WOOOO, please look after yourselves in the upcoming heat 🥵 and your bird friends, WOOO, WO, WOOOOOO"

In the UK we are set to have a week of high temperatures 🌡 in certain parts.

This means garden birds will need extra water and young fledgling birds may struggle.

DAVE says:

If you see a bird in need, fluffed up, gasping, weak, try to contain and call a rescue ✅️

If a wild bird is approaching a human this is not usually normal, sometimes it's a cry for help ✅️

Humans need to hydrate too, and don't forget the shades and hat 😎 ✅️

If you are hot or flustered, take a break from social media, don't take your frustration out on others ✅️

Thank you & updates 💖

It's been a really tough few days here at Russell's Rescue. The heat has made it challenging and a couple of our birds have become weak.

So we've quarantined them, they are on antibiotics and now perking up 🙌 just to be on the safe side we sent off faecal samples and no new birds will go into the main release aviary for now.

This has made life hard: separating birds, constantly battling with the heat. Changing waters and foods many times.

We are finding the wet food is not being eaten as much. So putting out more dry food and live food.

Updates

Lucky, Mike & Rascal

New arrival Lucky's wing is healing nicely. They are currently in with Mike and Rascal who both have concussion. Rascal was doing really well but tries to perch too high. So we've transferred into smaller area.

Dr Eggman

Is doing so well 🤗 still really stunted growth but the added supplements are helping.

Mickey the magpie

After successfully splinting the wing has completely healed. They can now fly 🙌 we couldn't be happier.

Muninn

We went to our specilialist vets. Sadly muninn had no sensation in the left foot and the right foot had twisted badly. There would be low quality of life and a bird who would be in pain and never fly or perch. Euthanasia was the kindness option.

Frank

Frank had made incredible progress but despite the best professional help he could not use his foot properly. Swelling had started and there was no longer any sensation. The only option would be an amputation which for ethical reasons would not be appropriate for such a big bird. And the fact he is a wild bird who wouldn't be able to be released, captivity for such a bird was not a good option. It absolutely broke our heart but euthanasia was the kindest option.

Updates & vets - we are off to the vets today!

Over the past 2 days we have opened for more urgent cases and as a stop gap for other rescues.

A few new patients 💖

Mike the magpie

Concussion from possibly flying into a window. Mike is resting well and as older with a family we hope to reunite in the next few days.

Muninn

Muninn has the vets today: their leg needs splinting and possible intervention and we need to know if they will improve with an xray. Muninn is a complex case and it's important we get the right support.

Lucky

A young rook with a new break to the wing. If they'll keep the splint on we are sure it will heal but as an older young rook they are not happy.
