Two swans came into our care last week, with very different outcomes.

The first had landed in a tank at a local water treatment plant and couldn’t get out. Thankfully, the worker on duty managed to haul her to safety and left her to dry off. His colleague at Yorkshire Water then called me to collect her and bring her back to the rescue.

She was soaked through, cold and stressed, but after a few days of warmth, rest and care, she was ready to be on her way. A big thank you to the workers who came to her aid. 💙

Sadly, the second swan had been involved in a road traffic accident on the A1033 and didn’t survive.

Our small flock of sheep is getting vaccinated against bluetongue today. 🐑 With more than 2,800 premises affected across the UK so far this season—including six in East Riding—the risk is too close to home.

Bluetongue is spread by biting midges, so even sheep that never leave their home field can catch it. It can cause painful mouth sores, swelling, lameness, and even death.

Defra describes vaccination as the most effective protection and urges all livestock keepers to discuss it with their vet, whatever their flock size. By vaccinating ours, we’re helping protect them from serious illness and potentially reducing the virus’s onward spread through midges. Small flocks have a part to play too.

Thanks to Georgie from Veterinary GROUP and to Adrian for their help

Its starting to feel a bit less crowded now as the birds are leaving for their life in the wild. Only the last two groups of ducklings left, (along with our resident four) out of the 94 mallards admitted this year.

Another busy month, but yes, it is starting to slow down.

In Sept, we saw over 100 admissions to the rescue. As usual, over half were pigeons, but the rest were a diverse group, including a juvenile gannet, a deer, two foxes, an owl, a sparrowhawk, and a kestrel.

We're still working on prepping for winter. Almost all the wood is painted now, and new floors have been put down in four pens. We've still got light fittings to put up, a couple more fox runs to build, some pavers to lay, and a lot of gardening work to do, but with your help, we'll be all set before the cold sets in. Thanks as always for your support - please consider a donation or offering a few hours of volunteering.
