Uber has launched the UK's first self-driving taxis in London. A fleet of 15 vehicles, each with a human safety driver ready to take over.

The BBC rode along. Mostly smooth, they say. But the safety driver did have to intervene when a van door swung open.

Wayve insists their AI would have handled it. The driver disagreed.

This is the hybrid model Uber keeps talking about. But make no mistake: the goal is to remove the human entirely. The question is not if, but when.

The DRA will keep watching. And we will keep fighting for drivers.

The ride-hailing app has launched 15 self-driving taxis, but they will have safety drivers inside.

EXCLUSIVE: Dutch regulator fines Uber $966 million for automating driver suspensions

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber €825 million ($966 ‌million) for deactivating driver accounts through automated systems without adequately informing them, according to an August 17 decision reviewed by Reuters.

Even Uber admits they got it wrong before. They ignored the societal impact, faced the consequences, and now promise a "hybrid model" where drivers and AVs operate side by side.

The DRA is not convinced. A hybrid model still leads to fewer drivers, less power, and a platform that controls both humans and machines.

A Waymo driverless taxi just drove straight into an active crime scene.

Police had cordoned off the area. Flashing lights. Clear signals to stop. The autonomous vehicle ignored them all and kept going.

This isn't a glitch. It's a fundamental failure of judgment. A human driver would have seen the tape, assessed the situation, and stopped. The machine had no idea.
