BATH HUNT SABOTEURS

The group formed in the mid-sixties, its aim then as now being to use non-violent direct action to protect wildlife where it is being threatened, harassed and mutilated in the name of sport. Hunt saboteurs meet every Saturday (and often during the week) during the hunting seasons, which vary depending upon which animal is being hunted. We often join with other groups for regio

nal and national actions. We monitor hunt activity using video cameras, whilst hand-held radios and mobile phones link the saboteurs in the field with the vehicle. Other main tools include:-
Ordnance Survey maps, hunting horns (used together with voice calls to mimic the Huntsman and confuse the hounds), whips (used to stop the hounds if they are on the scent of an animal or in danger of straying onto a main road, railway line etc. Whips are never used by us to hit the hounds but cracked in front of them and sprays are used to mask the scent of a hunted animal โ€“ again, these never come into direct contact with the hounds and are harmless, containing citronella-scented water. Hunt Saboteurs use carefully devised tactics to help the hunted animal escape while ensuring NO HARM IS DONE TO THE HUNT OR ANY OF ITS ANIMALS. We also lobby politicians, both locally and nationally, to support the hunting โ€œbanโ€. We will continue to sabotage hunts until this cruel and unnecessary activity ends for good. We meet the second Monday of each month at 6.30pm in the centre of Bath, please message us if you would like to attend. It's not only foxes that are persecuted by hunts, badgers are often the forgotten victims. Terrier men will block badger setts prior to a hunt day to prevent any fleeing foxes from seeking refuge. Yet further proof that there is no such thing as 'trail' hunting.

Badgers are protected by the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, making it an offence to interfere with a badger sett. Yet again more laws that are being broken by fox hunts.

Last year the BHSA released guidelines in relation to terrier men at hunts, and how they should not be present. Of course these guidelines were completely ignored and were merely a publicity stunt by the BHSA.

During the leaked webinar from the Hunting Office (now the BHSA) terrier men were described as the underbelly of hunting. Blocking badger setts is just one of their grimy jobs and their very presence at a hunt debunks the 'trail' hunting myth.

Wiltshire Hunt Sabs have uncovered horrific scenes of dead gamebirds at the Stockton Shoot.

Bonfires of dead charred birds bordering Stockton Wood and Down, a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The environmental impacts of intensive pheasant releases are well documented. High densities of released gamebirds can alter woodland ecosystems, damage sensitive ground flora, enrich soils with excessive nutrients and cause long-term degradation around release pens.

What has been documented raises serious questions about so-called environmental stewardship, biosecurity, animal welfare and regulatory compliance.

Illegal fox hunts not only persecute and kill wildlife they put local communities in danger by behaving dangerously on roads.

All too often hounds are out of control on roads, which can result in fatal consequences as we've seen over the years, hounds being hit and killed by cars.

Horse riders have little to no regard for motorists as they block roads in their quest for a kill. Not only putting the public in danger but also putting their horses in situations which may cause fear and distress.

Fox hunting is not only just that, it brings with it a whole world of law breaking and anti-social behaviour.

This fox was killed by the Heythrop Hunt during a cub hunting meet in 2019.

The purpose of cub hunting is to train younger hounds for the season ahead. They will be encouraged to tear apart as many foxes as possible to give them a taste for the kill.

There is no pretence of a trail, just blatant illegal hunting.

Cub hunting is now imminent so please be vigilant and report any information you have, in confidence, to the HSA or your local sab group.

With Autumn stag hunting due to start at any moment all eyes are firmly on the south west which is currently dealing with a Bluetongue virus outbreak.

It is raging through cattle and sheep and deer can also be affected by this virus. So with this in mind sabs have been out keeping a close watch on the three remaining stag hunt packs.

Bluetongue presents itself with a high fever and swelling of the lips and tongue, which can also become blue and protude from the mouth. Unfortunately it is spreading at a rapid rate so let's hope the stag hunts show some restraint.

Stag hunting in itself is cruel and barbaric without adding in the extra element of this awful virus.

The spotlight is firmly on the south west and sabs are watching.

Earlier this year Alex Thompson, Chief Correspondent for Channel 4, did a report on illegal fox hunting and how 'trail' hunting is merely a smokescreen. Part of this report featured men known to be associated with the Heythrop Hunt, encouraging foxes into a copse by feeding them. This copse is on land where the Heythrop Hunt are known to hunt. This particular footage was captured by Three Counties Hunt Sabs last summer.

Back in 2014 West Midlands Hunt Sabs caught the North Cotswold Hunt doing the exact same thing. A man paid by the hunt was caught was regularly filmed dumping chickens, offal, eggs and rats in an area where the hunt were regularly seen.

Why are hunts encouraging foxes into areas where they're supposedly 'laying trails?' The simple answer is one that is universally known; quite simply, trail hunting does not exist.

Rhys Matcham, huntsman of the Puckeridge and Essex Hunt had his case discontinued in Colchester Magistrates Court on Wednesday 4th August 2026.

Whilst disappointing that the animal which was killed by his hounds in January 2026, will never receive justice, how ever this case strengthens resolve that the law as it stands is not fit for purpose and needs strengthening.

We urgently need a ban on so-called โ€œtrail huntingโ€ - a smokescreen for actual hunting - and an introduction of a โ€œrecklessness clauseโ€ in order to protect wildlife and prevent these cruel deaths.

After being alerted alerted to illegal practises at a local shoot, Wiltshire Hunt Saboteurs paid a visit to the Stockton Shoot in Wiltshire and what they found was truly horrific โ€“ a bonfire full of dead charred birds, set next to the industrial sized operation.

"Given its prestige, resources and influence, the standards expected should be among the very highest in the country. Which begs the question, if this is one of the best, what must the backwaters shoots be like?"

Hunts all over the country will be gearing up to head out and kill foxes for the cub hunting season. Over the summer, older or 'unusable' hounds will have been killed by hunts, and the remaining ones will be encouraged to go out and kill fox cubs to get a taste for the main hunting season.

Cub hunting usually takes place early morning before it becomes too warm, or at dusk. There will usually be fewer riders who will surround an area where foxes are likely to be such as a copse. They will surround the area in order to turn any fleeing foxes back towards hounds to face a violent and painful death.
